Snakes seem to have the uncanny ability to know just when the bluebirds are ready to fledge and then to show up for dinner. How do they do it? I'm assuming they can't hear the baby birds - Are their heat sensors that good. Most of my bluebird boxes are mounted between 5 and 6 ft. off the ground on metal poles. (And I now use baffles) But time and time again, I've seen then get to a box that is not protected. I'm not complaining about snakes here -I like them too and they gotta eat also. Just curious about how they manage it.

THEY HAVE MANY WAYS OF DETECTING THE BIRDS. THEY CAN SEE THE BIRDS FLYING INO THE BOX AND CAN SMELL THEM AS WELL. CLIMBING IS AN EASY TASK WITH THEM BEING ONE LONG MUSCLE.

You might try coating the poles thick with marine grease. Keeps out ants too.
