I'm sure that everyone has their own proven technique, buy this is what works for me. I don't rake out leaves or bait the site. I just put out the pieces of tin. One important thing is that the piece of tin should be in direct sunlight. I've found that the time that you check the tin is the most important factor. I found more herps in the morning when the sun is just out, but the temp is still warming up. Good luck.
