FIRST YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE IT HAS A GOOD HIDE BOX AND PLENTY OF ROOM. WC BLK TAILS SEEM TO BE A BIT MORE SHY AND DON'T DO WELL WITH THE NEWS PAPER AND WATER BOWL DEAL. THEY HAVE TO HAVE REALISTIC SETTING IN ORDER TO THRIVE.

I agree with Cottonmouth. A good hide area is very important for providing security. I have kept several blacktails using cypress mulch as a substrate with great success. I have also experienced the finicky eater, especially in larger specimens. Like yourself, I tried gerbils, mice, rats etc.. but the snakes would show little interest in these. Live, wild caught kangaroo mice were offered and the snakes would eat these every time. If your snake still refuses the kangaroo mice, you might want to get it checked for internal parasites. Several specimens that I collected near Fort Davis, TX, were found to harbor pinworms. After treatment, these snakes had an aggressive feeding response. Good luck with your snake.

Thank you guys for the the replies. The snake in question is a sub adult/adult almost 3 feet in length. We have him set up in a terrarium of sorts using cypress mulch and cage props in a 55 gal aquarium. my wife put up the original post and did not mention that we also keep a jv atrox (fm) in the enclosure with him. Could this be the problem? Also how would you check for parasites with a snake that can produce no feces for examination?

JUST DON'T FEEN THEM TOGEATHER. WDB CAN BE VERY NERVOUS AND THE MOVEMENT OF THE BLACK TAIL MIGHT BE ENOUGH TO MAKE IT STRIKE THE OTHER.

During times of feeding we remove the atrox and feed her in a tote. We leave the molossus in the 55 gal to try and promote a feeding response as we have a few hots that will only eat in their enclosure.
Thanks again
