I recently read
the Bill Haast biography "Cobras in
His Garden". In it,
the author makes a
distinction between
milking venom and
extracting it. What's the difference? Thanks.

Hi KC,
I'm not sure of the context, but it's sort of the difference between 'push' and 'pull.' To milk a snake, you gently squeeze the head (it usually doesn't take much, as the angry snake is helping). To extract venom, you use a suction device. The Sawyer and Cutter kits are extractors for getting venom out of a bitten limb, for example. I'll not go into how well they work except to say that the Cutter, if used as designed, does more to enhance the venom's damage than it helps. And they are STILL marketing this piece of trash! Amazing!
Luck,

Hey, Filthy:
Thanks for your reply. To show the context for my
question, Harry Kursh writes: " 'Milking', unlike
extraction, which is a voluntary ejection of venom,
involves a technique of massaging the snake's glands."
Where I'm confused is how extraction applies to venom
collection.
Thanks again and happy herping!
