My wife and I live in south eastern Iowa. My wife was cutting the grass and called me over to see if a snake she spotted was alive or dead. The snake was surely alive. It was aproximatley 4 ft long, about a 1 1/2 inches in diameter at its thickest section, black from nose to toe, a whitish under belly, and had very dark brown/golden markings or sploches down both sides spaced about 1 to 2 inches apart. I would like to identify this snake as we have 2 small dogs that wander around the yard and might encounter this character again.
TIA & Regards,
Dave

Hi Dave,
What You have sounds like one of the Gopher Snakes, probably a Bullsnake (Pituophis melanoleucus sayi). It is non-venomous and a good snake to have around as it eats great quanities of rodents. However, if picked up, it will bite, although the bite is little more than a few pin-pricks. When it feels threatened or cornered it will hiss furiously and shake it's tail like a Rattler. These are favorites of many keepers. They soon become docile in captivity.
Hope this helps,
f
