Speak Out: Permitting System
Who would support a national venomous reptile permitting system? Does the current “state by state” system really make sense? Take for example the City of Bristol. If you drive down Main Street, Virginia is on your left and Tennessee is on the right. On the left side of the street, people can keep any venomous reptile they like without any type of permit. On the right side of the street, the residents can not keep any type of venomous reptiles, regardless of their qualifications. Does the 15 feet that separates the streets make that much difference?

Thats great Jeter! I could not have said it better. I Think a national permitting system would be just wonderful.

Yep...This is a free country, as long as you don't break the law. At that point your freedom can, and usually, is removed. And remember, laws are made when something happens. Most state laws exist because some goofball didn't have proper housing and got himself or someone else bit. And the knee-jerk reaction by the state was to pass a law that most likely sailed through the State House and Senate without any challenge. (I.E. Herp keepers didn't know about it). And it is tough to keep up with changing state laws, as it is a lot easier to change a state law....I live in KY and the law here has changed twice in a year. Not major changes, but definately something that I wanted to keep up with. If I hadn't looked I would have never known it.
So, saying all that means I would definately support a national permit system. Hot Herps are something that need a little chech-and-balance and a national permit system could be a good way to do that. I think we can all agree that it's not going to get any easier to keep hots!!!!

I agree with you copperheadkid, but since a lot of people's practices do affect others( such as people who do not properly house their animnals ) I must agree with laws. Also if any body could just go out and keep any venomous then many species would become much more rarer then what they all ready are.
How ever some laws are a little weird. I wont name any as of now mainly cause I can't bring them to mind at the point, but I will say that when a state changes a law they should inform keepers. I know a guy who had a friend who was busted because they changed laws and diddn't tell anyone.
Thats it for now.
Cheers,
Blake

Well I know this will sound crazy but. Sense this IS a free country shouldn’t we be FREE to keep what we want where we want (as long as our practices don’t directly pose a Thereat to others)!!!
