I have to say that you who are down on Steve Irwin seem to be missing some perspective. The vast majority of people who watch crocodile hunter are never going to try to handle ANY kind of snake regarless of what he does. He is dispelling the prima facia myth that these animals are viscious monsters that kill constantly, cruel evil demons. I think this fight is much more about not killing these animals on sight. I don't think his jumping on salt water crocs makes anyone else more likely to try that either. Austrailia Zoo also has exemplary herp habitats, does solid rescue work, as well as conservation and education. Croc Hunter helps pay the bills for that work. Circus indeed, wake up and smell the cat food, damn near everybody on the planet wants these animals dead. Next time you see him try actually watching him, or before deriding him from on high as dangerous bother to read his bio, his life and experience might surprise you. Certainly his croc rescue work in conjunction w/the Astrailian Gov't. is outstanding. Anyway, that's how I see things, Thanks for reading.

Personally I have always loved anything to do with animals but every since I have watched Steve Irwin I have further expanded my knowledge. Although he does go at it with a very dangerous technique I still respect him. I never really have liked O'Shea but only because I never watch him on tv. But surely I have respect for him. Because what he is doing. They both are there to conserve and teach us about wildlife. Im only 17 and its hard to find someone to explain and teach me the things I want to know expecially in my part of the world. But through this site and Animal Planet I am learning more and more everyday.
I just wish people will get off all of their backs because they are doing what they do for all the right reasons. Even if it is risky. Its all in respect for wildlife.

Steve Irwin has way more control over snakes than Mark O' Shea. After all, O' Shea has been bitten by a venomous snake and Steve Irwin has not. He has handled snakes for well over 20 years and he has the skill to handle venomous snakes without hurting them (unlike Mark O' Shea).

your all saying that degrees don't mean anything when you have passion and expierience, and I agree, however that is exactly what steve I. has!!! He has only conservation in mind, to show everyone the beauty of these creatures! Yes, he takes calulated risks, and he should it down slightly, but he is a great herper, and deserves more respect than this!

Steve Irwin "free handles" snakes because he is comfortable doing so. Big deal! Sure, he's putting on a show, but how is that selling out? Why wouldn't he do what he does? He obviously knows what he is doing, never having been bitten, and he does it with a lot of devotion and passion. What more could you ask for?

Anyone calling Steve a sell out obviously has not really looked into Steves background, or has any clue what Steve has done for the all retiles (not just snakes). While he may not milk the snakes and study the venom, he has helped out lots towards helping the population of several species. As well as raising awareness to much of the population that snakes are not just animals that like to kill for fun. As others have said, he may handle the snakes bare handed and not really be safe about it, he has the experiance to do so. The fact that he has never been bit by a hot snake shows that he must know something about what he is doing. You say his shows are circus acts, I say, lets see you find a better way to make more money than he is, only to give most of it to the preservations of these awesome animals
