Has anyone had any experience getting a WC coral snake to eat mice as opposed to lizards and snakes? If so, can you explain what worked for you? A friend of mine in Houston caught one and can't get it to eat. Is it a lost cause?

Before you can switch a snake from one diet to the other, it pretty much has to be feeding on the preferred prey item first.

Of all the ones I have known that have been switched over to pinkies, their lifespan has been drastically cut short. Most do great for about a year and then peter out quickly. Too much for them is my guess. Steve at Ft. Worth Zoo has a tener that is feeding on mice but I don't know what it's current status is. I have always had the best long-term luck with feeding natural diet. Skinks, and especially the blind snakes and earth snakes are usually a mainstay.

I think the coral is a lot like the eastern hognose, they have a specailized diet and thare bodies dont seem to be able to take the changes. I have heard of a eastern coral living off mice before, and the man that kept the snake said, the snake had been cout 13 years back. I dont know if the man was be less than truthful or not, but who knows. It could be the fact that it was the eastern sub-soecies, im not sure............happy herping Wally
