Hi ya'll, i have a strange question that maybe ya'll can help me with, it mite sound stupid but here gose. If i got a snake from a keeper, for exaple a canebrake, that for the first 2-3 years of its life has not been put into hibernation or brewmation as some call it, would the snake loose its natural instinct to hibernate? I know this sounds like a crazzzyy question, but i have ponderd this topic in my head for a long time now. If anyone can help i would apriciat it......thanks ya'll.....happy herping Wally.

Interesting question. Personally, I don't think that 2-3years of captivity will in anyway re-wire millions of years of instinct. I just woke up so I haven't researched this yet, but I'm going to see what i can dig up, and let you know what I find in a few hours (its 10 am here in Germany, 1 am on the east coast) so by the time you get up, I should have something. as always, happy herping

Hibernation is something hardwired into the snake. It's not a conscious action that the animal will "forget how to do". Just be sure to go through all of the proper steps for hibernating: voiding the snake's system, hydration, etc...
So simply put- yes the snake will hibernate just fine.

Hi Doug, thanks for the help. I knew that instinct was what drove hibernation. I just wonderd if it was posable that over a peariod of 2-3 years it couldbe made harder on the snake. Well thanks for the help............happy herping Wally.
