The daddy long leg is one of the most persistent myths. It was started by some moron from Texas (surpring how many things start with that line, but I digress). His logic was that since it feeds on other spiders, including black widows, it most be more toxic in order to overcome their venoms. Huh? Venom doesn't work that way, its not poker. Of the spiders, the Australian funnel web spiders (the 42 species in the Atrax and Hadronyche genera) are much more toxic (the Sydney isn't necessarily the most toxic of the funnel webs, it just has a better agent).
Cheers

The daddy long leg that you are most likely talking about is better called a harvestmen. Very common. It is non-venomous and is absolutely harmless. It is a spider relative but not a spider. It belongs to the order Opiliones. They have many mouth parts that they use to eat aphids and other plant insects. There defenses are losing legs and producing foul odors, while running away.
So that book, like many others would be incorrect. Sadly that happens quite abit in animal literature. Maybe not as much as animal tv.
There is an actual group of spiders called daddy long legs. I forget where they are from.
