THIS WOULD BE A QUESTION FOR SOMEONE WHO BELIEVES IN EVOLUTION. I DON'T THINK THEY HAVE EVOLVED IN ANY WAY OTHER THAN CHANGES IN THIER VENOM OR ADAPTABILITY.

hey thanks AL , the evolution of snakes thats some essay you gotta write.
paleontology gives poor info on the subject. snakes show much closer relationship with lizards then any other reptiles and this has been generaly accepted . some authors supposed that the ancestors of snakes were monitors and some authors thought they were more related to mosasaurs. NOPSCA beleaved that snakes originated from dolichosaures later after the discovery of a snakes called pachyophis. he then thought the snakes had evolved from unknown aigialosaurids. UNDERWOOD in 1957 supposed that the snakes are more closely related to geckos (pygopodidea) then varanoids, hoffsteter beleaves snakes and lizards evolved from a comman ancester , some people thought that snakes were the sister groups of the amphisbaenians but they were regarded as more closely related to lizards . snakes have also been thought to have aquatic ancesters. 1972 scientist thought that they evolved from mud dwelling animals.
the oldist known snake is lapperentophis deffreni which is a lower cretaceous snake. precise age is unknown . other early snakes were snakes like simoliophis which was a marine snake ( not venomous ) . a great discovery was when they found pachyrachis problematicus (on my display pic ) this snake had hind limbs its ancesters was lizards with 4 legs its decendents had no legs and so became snakes we know today. the evolution of venom come from colubrids which first developed enlarged teath eg the boomslang then cobras develpoed a more effective way of envenomating prey , the most recent snakes with fangs are vipers because they are much more specialized .
theres so much to tell you about this , for more info on there evolution go on google and type in simoliophis and go down to where it says hind limbed snakes.
i hope this helps your essay its gonna have to be a big one.
SHAUN
