I have seen a few of these large snakes around while field herping and can't clearly identify what they are, finally I got a couple pictures of one before it slid into the water and got away. I live right outside Houston, Tx which is where I took these pics I think this is a Blotched Water Snake (Nerodia erythrogaster transversa) but am no positive so i'm hoping somebody can help, thanks. Heres three links:

Definitely Nerodia. My guess is that its N.rhombifer, but could be N.cyclopion or N.erythrogaster transversa. Really hard to tell by the photos with all the dried algae obscuring the snakes pattern. Catch it next time for positive identification. -Mike

Nerodia rhombifer. You can tell by the "X" marks. Plus he has those goofy eyes, lol. Good find.

Ahh I see what you're saying about the eyes comparing it to the pic in the Werler & Dixon books Diamondback Water Snake..just never saw a pic of one that color to match it up with. Everytime I see one of these I try to catch them to get a better pic, but always they are a foot or two from water and disappear into it before I can get near enough. Those three pics I posted were from about 15 feet away had to crop them down because there was a lot more distractions (bushes, etc) in the originals. Thanks for the help.
