Hey, I was looking in the photo section. On page 20 of the Viperinae section I saw a photo that said Agkistrodon contortrix. After lookin at the photo I think that it is a cross between a copperhead and a cottonmouth.

Mardi Snipes at CoastalReptiles in SC successfully produced this hybrid last year or the year before. Wicked looking little snakes. If you're interested, you may want to get ahold of him and see if he has plans to produce any more. I believe the ones he had for sale went quickly.

Yeah, the ones Mardi Snipes produced, were definatly different looking. I thought they were pretty neat. So I wouldn't doubt that the one you seen could indeed be a cross.

In my opinion, baby cottonmouths and copperheads dont look drastically different, so to me, the hybrid is not such a big deal. They dont really strike me as all that cool, but hey...to each their own right? I am curious though to see how they look as adults. If it'll keep the pattern like a copper, or fade away like a moccassin.

Ive heard of Coastal Reptiles' cottonheads. Cool animals. Could anyone tell whether or not the photo in the Viperinae section page 20 was a cross?

It is hard to tell Jeremy. I think it does kind of resemble one, of coures the only ones I have seen are Mardi's. And I wasnt very impresed by the looks either, but I cant wait to see what they look like as adults!

Juvenile copperheads and moccasins look very similar and usually take a second look even from the most experienced of herpers. I have yet to see or hear of a naturally occuring hybrid in the wild as their microhabitats usually don't mesh. As far as hybrids in the private sector....well....don't even get me started there.

I would have to disagree that juvenile copperheads and cottonmouths look similar enough to warrant confusion. I'm by no means an expert, but I can easily tell the two apart. I've yet to see a baby cottonmouth that had the simplistic, subdued coloration and patterning of a copperhead. I've also never seen a copperhead with such vivid patterning on the face as a cottonmouth. To me, there is very little to mistake. I personally thought the hybrids did look very unique, almost like a copperhead with attitude. I also look forward to seeing one as an adult.

After taking the time to click through all the pages to p. 20, I'd have to say that the snake in the picture is definitely a cottonmouth and is labeled correctly.
