Hello. Alot of people are confused with this latin name. Alot of people think that Bitis gabonica rhinocerous is the rhinocerous viper but it isnt. The rhinocerous viper is Bitis nasicornis. The Gaboon viper is Bitis gabonica rhinocerous.

Hi:
Actually your mostly right. Bitis gabonica rhinocerous is the West African Gaboon Viper; Bitis gabonica gabonica is the East African Gaboon Viper. As you said Bitis nasicornis is the Rhino Viper or sometimes known as the "River Jack".
Cheers!

Hello Phobos,
In fact both Bitis gabonica AND Bitis gabonica rhinoceros occur in West Africa. Their natural ranges actually overlap, so both can be referred to as the West African Gaboon Viper.

The East African Gaboon Viper (Bitis gabonica gabonica) has two dark brown stripes on either side of the head. The dark stripes are seperated by a pale stripe that runs between them.
The West African Gaboon Viper (both Bitis gabonica and Bitis gabonica rhinoceros) has a single dark brown/tan stripe on either side of the head. Each stripe runs from the edge of the eye to the edge of the upper lips, in a "20 to the hour" direction.
