I was just courious to see how the SHHS felt about free handleing? The reason I ask is because, I was looking at the site mem photos and it looked like a few people was doing this, including a 15 year old. I have heard that the SHHS has asked people to remove pics before, so what is different about the ones on this page? I know some of you will try to say that they are voids, but it doesnt matter, A young herper looking at these photos doesnt know that and it might get him hurt or killed down the road.

I agree, we as keepers and handlers should show a bit more respect for the fact that young keepers watch our evry move. I dont like seeing the freehanding pics either, I would venture as fare as to say that it very well could couse a lot of young keepers to think they can do it as well. Just look at it this way, if you was a expearieced keeper and you freehanded your snakes what do you think your young student is gone start doing down the road? So to close i very much desagree with alowing freehanding pics or any other such things that show it, but thats just my opinion. I say lets try and teach that other ways can be found insted of freehanding. I hope that maybe the idia of not showing freehand pics will keep a lot of younger keepers from playing with that loaded and cocked gun.......Happy herping Wally

Hi:
This organizations mission is to promote the safe handling of venomous reptiles. Website management in the past has asked that those pictures that demonstrate un-safe practices be removed. Short of spending time looking at every image out there they is no easy way to police them. If you see images that are questionable I suggest you email the webmaster and bring them to his attention.
Safe Keeping,
Al

It isn't difficult to figure out why that person is feehandling that snake....just look at his nick.
What I want to know is why his parents are letting him keep ANY hots, even a mangrove. Is it any wonder why there have been so many bites and so many places banning hots over the past year?

Well Billy, it's like this.
The SHHS, as an organization, does not recommend or approve of freehandling. I did not find any pics of a 15 year-old freehandling (unless you mean the Mangrove which is still not recognized as being dangerous), so perhaps you could email me at Buzztail1@hotmail.com.
I do not approve pictures of people freehandling but I am not the only one that approves pictures.
I also do not approve pictures of people freehandling venomoids but there are obviously some here.
So, if pictures make it through, we generally don't delete them unless the person posting asks us to. We do not ban people for freehandling and we don't just delete their pictures. We do discourage it and do everything that we can to promote safe handling techniques. If our failure to ban people for their handling techniques means that some people won't let their children learn here, then I guess we lose some of our target audience.
At that point, I would quote one of our Presidents who said:
You can please all of the people some of the time,
And some of the people all of the time,
But no-one can please all of the people all of the time.
We do the best we can.

Review this thread. Should answer any questions you may have. We as an organization denounce free handing, however, we allow people who free handle to be members of this organization. You may well see photos of individuals posted on this site and others free handling snakes, that does not indicate we support the practice, only that some of our members engage in the activity. I have never liked it when someone makes a statement like “someone else may see it and try to imitate it.” You are in essence saying I am smart enough to know better, but other people aren’t. it’s a bogus claim! You are smart enough not to mimic that you see, then other people are too.

I will let anyone handle my copperhead for free. Just sign the agreement and when it bites you get in your car and leave - just a little humor. Although I did see a show where a bunch of Pentecostals where carrying around bunches of Tennessee hots during their service. Made me curiouse. They picked them up like they were corn snakes.
