My opinion on free handling: I got an earful when I posted a pic of me freehandling. Its not something that should be attempted by pressure or just because someone else did it. I agree to an extent that If someone saw someone else free handling that they would probably try it once, for example:If someone heard that a copperhead wasnt as potentially deadly as some other snakes and they had a non aggressive copperhead and saw someone free handling, they may take it out with there bare hands next time they clean out the cage. But whos really to blame when someone takes a chance with there snake knowing well what the consequences could be. If me or anyone around me got harmed by my animals then it would be my fault. But if someone saw someone freehandling and they decided that they can do it than it is their fault. I look at free handling a snake like this:If you free handle a snake there is a chance that you could slip up,but If you know the risk and have handled a certain species of snake for years then I think that you are less likely to make a mistake than an amatuer.Same as any other hobby, you learn as you go and hope you dont make to many mistakes on the way. And if you are cautious and watch what you are doing and be open to learn as much as you can than you are less likely to make a mistake. Yes I have free handled, but I know well what could happen if I make that tiny mistake. Another reason you shouldnt be careless is because if you get bitten by a snake, it doesnt only conflict with you and the people around you, it affects us all, laws etc. I think the mission of this site is to promote safe keeping, safe handling and safe learning, and if they let everyone post pics of themselves free handling then sooner or later it would turn into a competition. Lets say someone posted a picture free handling a rattlesnake, someone might see that and be like "Hey I can do better then that and take out their pet mamba and take a picture freehandling so that they can be the king of the hill. the most brave warrior if you will. But if they did that then they know what they are getting in to and a bite would be the persons fault and theres noone to blame except the person that took the risk. And if you tell the people at the hospital that you got bitten because you saw someone else do it then you are still going to be stuck with the huge medical bill.

Howard:
If you look at the news reports back around last Easter you will find that one of these religious handlers was bitten by a Timber Rattlesnake and died. He refused treatment. RIP
I will not pass judgment on what they believe but they do and I praise their conviction to their religion.
It blows MY mind to see them holding them like milksnakes too. I had a meltdown when I saw someone handle a fully loaded King Cobra like it was a Red Tail Boa.
Oh well....

Oddly enough I am co-authoring an article on religious snake handling with a theologian. He is going to deal with the spiritual and I am going to address the serpents. It’s not magic. Snakes do not want to bite. They have to be hurt or scared to strike. I have been to the services many times and seen probably a 100 rattlers, coppers, and cottons “taken up” and I have not witnessed a bite as of yet.

I am not passing judgement on ones religious faith either however no one is going to tell me an Eastern DB or Canebreak Rattler can just be picked up. Every CB rattler I've seen is meaner than all get out. My theory is they come out of the fridge. I do beleive that in the wild they will try and avoid contact and biting, in general, is a last resort but whenever I've seen cages hots they do not take kindly to human interaction. Something about a big hand reaching for the head makes them a bit uneasy??? I could care less about being PC when it comes to spreading good hot handleing. This forum has too much talk of free handleing and when I initially signed up and asked about it I was told rather firmly not to handle my copperhead. I took this to heart and will not do so but now it seems it is time to make sure this forum stands firm on this issue and perhaps adding "we do not condone the handleing of venemous reptiles" to the logo or something. Otherwise one day some jerk will get us shut down I'm afraid.

while some people may like a cheap thrill, there are other, less potentially lethal, ways of getting this, go to a theme park, go sky diving...free handling hots is like playing russian roulette with a semi..you will get hit, it's not if, but when, and it hurts, take my word on it, I have photos of a moderate bite from a cottonmouth, and it's expensive to treat, CroFab is several hundred dollars per vial, typical treatment is 2-4 vials, every 6 hours until the patient is stable, followed by one additional dose...and I put emphasis on pain...I'm thankful for morphine, demerol, and codeine...free handling=not good

If not but when. I dont agree with that. I think if you watch what you do and do jump to quick to get into something than you can do it without harm.
