Hey ya’ll, I was wondering if anyone can give me any info on the care and caging of (Proatheris superiliaris) the Lowland Viper. I have been doing some reading on this Species, and I think I mite try to invest in one after I move away from AL. They are a truly beautiful Species. I also would like to know a little more about the toxicity of the Venom. If anyone can help me, I would truly appreciate it. Thanks ya’ll.......... Be safe, happy herping, Wally

Hi wally i don t have any experiance in keeping one so its not for me to say but as for its venom :
From all the books i ve read about snakes in africa i remember reading that its venom can cause immediate pain with mild swelling and blistering at the site of the bite . But i also remember it saying somthing like existing anti venoms do not neutralise the venom . This is just what i remember reading so if anyone has any more info on Proatheris supercilaris venom i would like to know aswell.
anyway hope it helped .
SHAUN

Its very Atheris like in ability to really screwup the blood. The venoms are pretty similar on a molecular level. Have a look at our 2003 paper that had that venom in it:

Hey, thanks ya’ll, I appreciate the help. I will be trying to put together a small collection of Exotics when I move. Me and my fiancé have picked either Louisiana or Mississippi to move to, being both states have very lenient laws on keeping Venomous Reptiles. What I really hope for, is that after I move there, that they don’t change the laws and ban the hobby. Ohhh well, I guess I have to take the chance, if I don’t I will never be able to keep any exotics here. Thanks again ya’ll..........PS : welcome back Shaun, your input has been missed................Be safe, happy herping, Wally

Wally:
Keep in mind that LA will shortly have regulations on the books almost the same as Florida.

Het Al, thanks for the pre-warning. Do you know if Mississippi has any bills in the works to regulate keeping? I surly hope they don’t, but if they do I guess I will have to find a keeper to get my permit time from. Maybe if I can get to Mississippi early enough, I can get a permit by already having my Animals huu? Well, thanks again ya’ll for the help, I appreciate it.......Be safe, happy herping, Wally

Actually, having had both, they are remarkably different to keep than Atheris. For no other reason than Atheris are arboreal, Proatheris are terrestrial.
A major caveat, Proatheris are absolutely mental. The ones I milked were complete nutcases. During one milking session, out of milking four snakes I managed to get one fang into the container. The snakes all wasted their venom nailing the hook, the side of the cage, my shadow etc. in frenzied blurs. Really watch out for these snakes. Hard to hook but will go through a glove. Very much a snake only for the extremely experienced keeper, particularly considering the lack of effective antivenom.
Cheers
Bryan

Hey Bryan, sounds like a little spot of dynamite, the way you describe them sounds like they would be a little hard on the nerves. What I mite do is spend some time handling my friends (Proatheris superciliaris) Lowland Viper, and see what I think about keeping one at this time. Hey ya’ll, thanks for all the help, I appreciate all the responses. Thanks again ya’ll.....Be safe, happy herping, Wally
