I have caught many venomous snakes out of the wild and several times without tools too. Really do you think being bitten 8 times is not bad. Then you are completely insane. I have worked with many venomous snakes and never been bit. You really need to find a different hobby. You really put a bad name to the herpetological comunity. You should not at all kepp that rattlesnake. By the way how are you so sure its 8ft. That is very rare for that species. And you get bit probally you will die. A snake that size could easily kill several people. It does matter how docil it is. I have a friend who was handling a 40in copperhead. They snake was very came and very struck at anything. Until that day some odd reason it turned around and bit him.

Dadee you are of course right. Looking back on my post with 20/20 hindsight aided vision. I realize now that while I did not intend to, I did in fact make light of those bites. My intetion was to prove with numbers, that the effect does not go away. However the way I did it was piss poor. I shall now wipe the tomato off of my face and put my soap box away.
Joshua, do not let my idiocy in the way I wrote the statement fool you. Bites are nothing to play around with.

I know he is 8 feet because his old pen was exactly 8 feet and he became to large for it. I don't know what kind of assistans you have had on your forays, but if you have managed to avoid getting bit with the same level on incompetance I have had to deal with (which I doubt) but if that is the case I will admit you are a better handler then I. And do not worry, I have no dellusions about my rattler being safe because he is docile. And I spend a great deal of my own money on a personal supply of antivenin in case myself or someone else should be bitten by him.
Back to you Joshua, do you have anyone who can mentor you on venomous animals? A lot of my screwups could and would have been avoided if someone knowledgble in the field had been there to mentor me. You can see the flak they are giving me, do not enter into this lightly or you will end up the same. But in the case of your animal, you may end up dead. As I have mentioned above I keep my own supply of antivenin in case of a bite, you might want to consider doing the same.

Vincent,
It was not meant as flack partner. I merely wanted to turn your focus back to the underlying statement of "think before speaking". I believe, Joshua and everyone else will be served better if you and I alike keep on that path. I was enlightened when I saw your post. Here's someone who can really get to the point and not jump off track. That was meant as thumbs up. We could all learn from that one statement of thinking before we speak...as some posts have been pointed out.
I believe that education is far more paramount than that of jabbing at someone. If you had been mentored, no doubt you probably would have not had your bad experiences with the wrong end of the snake. I also teach gun safety around my own home, along with my snakes. I make no distinction between a firearm and my snakes. They both are considered loaded at all times, which requires strict attention at all times.
Joshua, all of these posts are only meant to keep one thing on your mind, Safety. A custom secure cage, is obviously not something that everyone has the financial ability to obtain, however, when you venture into the larger more agile and lethal vens, you need to have that other portion available...finances. If you get tagged, the repair bills from the hospital would amount to nothing less than devastating to say the least. Opt for the more securable cage...8 feet of a dangerous item is really hard to handle in something that allows it enough spring to literally fly out at you.
Take care,
Matt

Wow yall fight way to much, to be mature enough to keep venomous reptiles, if you see or in our internet case read of some body doing wrong by all means correct them but leave the name calling and fighting to the kids, and as for the kids here leave the hot's for the grown ups and sit back and learn so that one day you will be able to coach people on how to properly and saftly keep venomous reptiles, now those that have been bitten several times well you obviosly dont know how to keep hots saftly, I wouldnt say find a diffrent hobby but may be you need to take on some less dangerous snakes, not get the hell out of this hobby you dont know what your doing, but instead stay and learn but use you head. I know that I cant rock climb but I still like to watch. Like I said befor use your head for something more than a hat rack and please be safe.

I am by no means saying that I don’t believe you, but I really want to see your 8’ EDB. Do you have any pics? You are only 300 miles from me, I would be willing to travel up there to she him. Give me some more info, what is the gender, locale? Have you breed it? Contact me off line if you would rather not speak in public. My email is chuck@screptiles.com and I have a toll free number at my office, feel free to call me there. 888.449.2493

Appreciate the offer I am sure you would give him a good home. But all animals here before the pan are granfathered in as long as the owner has proof that they owned the snake before the ban was passed.

Do you have that in writing? I have heard it that way, but the more recent information I am getting does not include any grandfathering, only the exceptions are for indigenous. Either way, if you don’t want to sell, I still want to see this animal. Get in touch with me off line. Thanks ---Chuck
