Jeremy: Stuff like this is hard to research, and you will find many folks who will dissagree on many points of it.
There is so much political stuff mixed in, that they all often slant the ideas to support their agendas. This happens on both sides. It is easy to use research data to support a certain point of view, and manipulate how it is presented.
The main thing to remember, is that when you read a "scientific" study about the enviornment, or wildlife, there will be just as many other scientists on the other side who will dissagree. It is kind of like the folks who debate Canebrake verses Timber Rattlesnakes. There are good researchers on both sides of the issue. You just have to be carefull when you see something printed to allways question it, and ask if the person writing it had an agenda to push.
One of my good friends is a Enviornmental Lawyer who used to work for Democrat Albert Gore as an advisor. He wrote environmental stuff for Gore to use in speaches, stuff like global warming, etc. Well, Gore lost, and now my friend works for a Republican Senator, writing enviornmental advice for her speaches. The funny thing is that he is using the same data he used for Gore, and now writing the exact opposite in the speaches he prepares for the Senator ! All because the data can be looked at many different ways, and to keep his job, he has to slant it to the agenda of his new boss! LOL ! American Poletics in Action !
The main thing is to keep your passion. Now that you can vote, learn about the people running for office, try to vote for folks in your area who do not support the development of the mountains. And if the DNR or Feds have public hearings on land use, attend the meetings and speak up about how you want the land used. And write to the Governor and your Senators and Congressmen, and tell them what you support. Believe it or not, they do listen to letters from voters!
Best Regards JohnZ
