my female east african gaboon passed away today. it happened when i soaked her, i dropped her in the bucket as usual, she threw her fit as usual, thrashing around and what not, but this time she must have snapped her back. mid trashing she rolled over dead right in front of me. this crushes me she was my favorite snake and something i was pretty proud of. if anyone is interested i have some cobras and a waglers for trade for another east african gaboon.

You say 'i dropped her in the bucket as usual, she threw her fit as usual, thrashing around and what not'. Did you ever think that the thrashing was because the snake was trying to tell you that you have the water too hot or too cold? Or that it just dosnt like to be mooved? Why do you even need to soak the gaboon at all? Why not just mist it? I know of many gaboons that have lived for many, many years with just misting.

I deleted a vulgar post that was here and relaced it with mine.
Sorry to hear about your loss. Very strange occurance, one that I've not heard of happening before. I soak young Gabbys & Rhinos but once the get BIG I just mist them, mine actually drink right from the end of the "garden sprayer" that I use to mist. This way I don't stress them or ME by having to remove them from their cage and soak them.
Sorry again, loosing any animal, favotite or not is a tragety.

thank for the sensitivity anonymous weasels. my lesson has been learned the hard way. prior to this i soaked all my gaboons, puffs, and rhinos the same way and never had a problem and as far as i know soaking your snakes in room temperature water is standard practice.

Sounds kind of odd to me. If the snake had broken it's back, especially somewhere down towards the back 3rd of the body, then you should still see some movement from the front portion....for a little while anway, until the lungs or heart stopped beating, if they WERE affected by the neurological disconnection, but it should take a few minutes. A sudden death sounds like something else to me. Maybe a bone in it's GI ruptured thru the intestines, or something odd like that.
Regardless, I know it's a bummer to lose a snake, no matter what the reason.
Thrashing around is something that is dangerous to a handler as well as the snake, wether its from grumpiness or pain, and in the future I would try to come up with a method to minimize behavior if you run across it again.

Aaron,
Easy man, the trolls want you to react. They have a perfect right to be jerks as long as they keep it clean, if not, then they get zapped. They are best delt with by going on without giving them notice.
It's difficult now because your bummed and everybody who really cares about these animals knows how you feel. You did nothing wrong from what I can see, Crap happens from time to time. Everybody learns from these sort of misfortunes even though we don't have specific answers for what happened.
Best,
Al

Aaron,
Sorry for the loss. I was in your boat, last October(?), when a yearling was lost. It totally ripped me apart. Then again this year, to have my entire collection vanish. Best of luck on your recovery.
