Cumberland island SUCKS!!!!!Way too much money to get there with very low productivity. I have seen 1 EDB in the many, many trips over and they say there are 80,000 on the Island, yeh right! don't get me wrong, it's a wonderful place, just not very many snakes.

Walt: Seeing EDB's on Cumberland, Sappelo, Ossebo, etc is not easy to do. Folks have lived on these islands for 200 years, and mostly killed every snake they saw in there rice, cotton or cane fields. Sure, the snakes are still there, just not easy to find. If you really want to find EDB's, get the USGS topo quads of the marshes, and a compass or gps unit, and go to some of the unnamed islands. Be prepared to wade through muck at low tide out into the marshes after your boat gets bogged down. On some of these marsh islands, you might find 30 or 40 EDB's per day, but it is a whole lot of work in a hot, humid, tick filled, mosquito ridden area! Most folks don't bother, but the snakes are out there, on the islands, if you are willing to work to see them. JohnZ

Thanks John, you are right, I don't think I want to take on that task! Ithink I will stick with the old abandoned houses and barns of Kingsland, Ga.

It's been a long time since I went to Blackbeard Island, but as I recall, it was very snakey. Also, the most snakes I've ever seen on a single trip was canoeing in July on the Canoochee river which runs through Ft. Stewart. Saw a monster cottonmouth crossing a sandbar at Ft. Stewart during a seperate trip that had to be around 6 feet.
