VenomousReptiles Community:
I'm considering buying a book about venomous snakes. I was reading the reviews of the following books and I was wondering which one would be a better choice or if it would be worth it to get both?
The Venomous Reptiles of the Western Hemisphere
Poisonous Snakes of the World
Thank you.
Best Regards,

As always the more knoweldge you have (even if its incorrect) the better off you will be in the long run. It took a lot of wrong answers for Edison to get the light bulb right. I would try to buy, borrow, or check out and read every publication written on venomous snakes that you can find. So both would be a good starting point.
Anyway Campbell and Lamar's book Venomous Reptiles of the Western Hemishpere is BY FAR ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS written on the subject. I would reccomend this book first. However, this book is limited to American reptiles. So if you are intersted in more exotic species cobras, true vipers etc. Then I would still suggest both.
Good luck and keep learning,
T.C.

Both are excellent books that should be in every herpetologist library.
The Venomous Reptiles of the Western Hemisphere is a fantastic, very up to date book, but cost a lot of money. It is worth it if you have a serious interest in reptiles, and can afford it.
Poisonous Snakes of the World is an excellent book, although it is many years old. It can be found very inexpensively on Ebay. I still use it often, but you must remember that many of the scientific names it uses are out of date, and sometimes whole groups of snakes have been re-classified. The way it is organized still makes it a very valuable reference.

I concur 100% with T.C.. The VNWH volumes have by far been the best books that I've purchased for my reference library. They do not cover those exotic species as T.C. points out, which is quite alright with me. I only wish that their counterparts would publish something of this nature for the eastern hemisphere. Since it took them so long to write this follow up, I can't step on them for missing some elements that would help some laymen in their pursuits to create life like conditions for thier collections.
