It's usually a local name for the Pigmy Rattlesnake or the Massassauga depending on where you live (Both of the genus Sistrurus).

The name ground rattler is for a pigmy rattlesnake. I used the term in here once and it offended some anonymous poster. I am from Florida, and my grandfather always used the term "ground rattler". Bryan

I also heard my Father and Grandfather call Pigmy Rattlers by the name Ground Rattler. If you think about the Habits of this Species, you can see were the Name came from. Most Pigs I have found were found on the ground or under a log. I have noticed that Common Names are normally given in accordance with the observed Habits of the so Named Animal. Who on Earth knows what other Names Snakes in this Country have been given. Look at the Eastern Hognose Snake AKA: Spreading Adder, Puff Adder and I have even heard them called American Cobra. (Go figure!!!!!!). just goes to show that Names can not be narrowed down when using Common Names. It’s a confusing world we live in, even concerning the Snakes we adore..........Be safe ya’ll and stick to Scientific Names, just a good way to kill the confusion “LOL”. Happy herping Wally

Check out http://www.coastalreptiles.com/sistrurus.htm
This is a great site to see pictures of all kinds of pigmy rattlers. Mardi has got some incredible pictures, and some really great animals too. If you find your snake on this page, then you do indeed have a pigmy rattler, buzzworm, or ground rattler, all common names for the same type of snake.
