Where would he be now if someone like Bill Haast wasnt allowed to keep legally? HE would not exist. This is outrageous. Its all about him making money and having an easy life. Hes tired of working so he will just take all of the work away and collect his check. He will have a zoo full of snakes and laugh as he sees us walk by with our Ball Pythons and corn snakes(because thats all we will be allowed to keep.)I told everyone a while back that he was a bad apple and everyone jumped all over me. I knew he would do something like this. I could tell he was arrogant.

What really pisses me off is that he supports a ban out of one side of his mouth, yet makes private sector buys out of the other.

You all seem to bow down to bill haast...what has he contributed to anything in the 50 some odd years he's been doing this? Husbandry? nothing he still force feeds all his animals. caging...nope. understanding of bites and the effects on humans....nope. Breeding strategies? nope.................Nothing but raw venom and showmanship and his raw venom is not very clean or organised. Rather similar to a circus act all about showman ship. Nothing wrong with that as long as everyone knows it.
Also, you obviously haven't a clue how little money their is in being a zoo keeper and how little affect the private sector has on a public exhibit.
for the yokel who has banned two reptile zoos because we oppose him. The funny thing is there are not two people more supportive of private keeping. Everyone here is trying to place blame on someone else (scapegoat). The truth of the matter is, it's all your own faults. Why not fix the problems instead of whining like a six year old.
I am really disheartened to learn that you won't be visiting anytime soon, because you might learn something.
Have a nice hobby all!

Mr. Bill Haast has done a lot more than you ever give him credit for. First off, he brout a bigger awareness of the Lives and Habits of this Animals to the Public. Second, he is a revolutionized the Venom collection proses in ways that are still used, to this day. I would think he deserves a little more respect than what I just saw given, wouldn’t you? In our community, he is a true ground breaker. I think him to be the most respected Venomous Keeper in this country, possibly the world. As to the last part of your post, we are trying to do something about this. It is a little hard to do when self centered yuppies like Jim Harrison, don’t give you the time to come up with a good way to handle the problem. Now, I have only been a member of this site for about 1 ½ years now, but I know that it takes at least 5 sometimes 6 years to get a ball rolling on things like this. I think it comes down to this. Some of the members of our community think that the common person should kiss their all powerful feet. Well, let me tell you, there are some in our community that are not going to let you tare us down. Time to set the boot down and tell them no more. If they want to play the back stabbing game, put the boot to their seniority. Let them know we are not their puppets.............................Be safe ya’ll, happy herping Wally

Everyone is so angry over an issue that is not black and white. Quit generalizing its very unfair.
So here is some gray bits and pieces:
People have stated, that the escapes and bites are the private sectors falt. Well...its not the zoo's fault. And unfortunately that leaves the private sector. BUT, I have done nothing to cause ANYONE problems and I am private now! So is it MY fault too?
Under such reasoning it would be fair to say, the gorilla excapes at the Dallas Zoo and Oklahoma City Zoo in the past 3 years are the public sector's (zoos) fault. Well...its not the private sector's fault. And unfortunately that leaves the public sector(zoos). BUT, the Ft. Worth Zoo has done nothing to cause ANYONE problems and they are public. So is it their fault too?
Under this reasoning, all private keepers should be banned from owning venomous and all zoo's should be banned from having gorillas. Right?!
Black and white doesn't cut it:
Fact. Not all private keepers are responsible.
Fact. Not all zoo keepers are responsible.
Fact. Some private keepers are very qualified and responsible.
Fact . Some zoo keepers are very qualified and responsible.
Fact. Some zoo keepers used keep privately.
Fact. Some private keepers used to work at zoos.
Fact. Bans are a direct threat to the hobby and to all private keepers.
Fact. Promoting a ban is equivalent to promoting a direct threat to the hobby and all private keepers.
Fact. Permitting systems are very good for the hobby and NOT a threat to responsible private keepers.
Fact. Permitting systems are a direct threat to the unqualified bad keepers and the dealers who profit off of them.
It certainly seems that the crux of Mr. Harrison's letter portrays a promotion of a ban. Thus, a direct threat to all private keepers.
Jim Harrison did not kill the hobby but he did support the notion. And therefore I feel disrespected. A person must give me at least some respect to receive it back. It is NOT his fault but he didn't make it any better.
If a respected zoologist has supported or suggested a ban on keeping gorillas in zoos because "gorilla keepers were irresponsible" I would imagine the gorilla keepers would be upset too.
On a lighter note, "how 'bout those Yankees"
The very gray,
T.C.

Mr. Reptile Gardens, you're a zero, pal. What's YOUR contribution to the hobby, besides being a zookeeper and flapping your big yap on internet forums? So Haast's "raw venom is not very clean or organized", huh? You got this from who, your buddy Harrison? You two clowns together couldn't lift Haast's shoes with a forklift ( I know, I already used that one once, but I like it). And, by the way, not that long ago I received an e-mail from someone who's more respected as a herpetologist than you could ever hope to be, calling you a jerk. A spot-on description, I'd say.

Bill,
gaining respect from you or anyone else is not a concern of mine..never has been. My contributions are not on the discussion table nor are they a concern of mine.
My opinion of Mr. Haast is my own and where I get my info has nothing to do with Mr. Harrison.
A jerk is certainly not the worst thing I've been called. Being liked is not a concern of mine.
Your knowledge and experience is so limited by your own admissions that your opinion of me matters not.
I don't speak insults. I speak either fact or opinion, both of which I am entitled to do.
You would think by 50 years of age Bill you would have outgrown that too.
You are always insulted when someone says something about Mr. Haast that you don't like. Almost like you yourself are being insulted. I didn't even insult Haast, I asked a couple of simple questions, none of which you have an answer for. You are obviously a star struck fan, defending people that don't need nor probably want your defense.
Best Regards,

I feel that Jim has really backstab our community. How dare him preach to people about venomous snakes and then turns around a gives our community a cold shoulder. I feel that if anyone had respect for him before the letter he sent out, now will have lost most if not total respect for him now. I have lost total respect for him. Not durring this but even before this. I feel that he is just a person who thinks only for only himself and no one else. He has become an embarassment to our community. He has lied several times to people. Since he feels like he is top dog he can just pan everyone else. I know plenty of zoo keepers who kept venomous snakes way before even working at zoos. That is what made them want to work there in the first place. If you outlaw venomous snakes then many people will not want to work with them and care for them. We all get shund by others. I have personally many times on not only this form but others. I think so people might feel that I am reckless but have you ever herped or talked with me in person. Probally not so keep your opinons to yourself. I think judging a person over the internetcan be ludacrisy. On a few occasions it can be accepted though. I feel that probally many people have not met Jim but what he now have said, I have a feeling not many people want to. Their are a few occasions that I will judge people I don't know. I usally will have a good reason to though. Unfortanily I have lost respect for several people on this website and even more on other websites. I hate that we always will have to put up with people who think they are always better than us but really they are a lot worse. People need to be more supportive of others. I feel that so many people are way over rated. And also the ones who are can be one hell of a asshole. I do not feel I am better than someone else unless I have talked to them in person and I also have a good reason. One other thing I must put in is that what ever happened to America with all its freedom. Right to bear arms and right to bear venomous snakes...
