According to the American Society of Icthyologists and Herpetologists,
"Herpetologists include people with advanced academic degrees, non-scientists who work with amphibians and reptiles for a living, and people who pursue herpetology as an avocation. All herpetologists share two traits: (a) a strong interest in one or more kinds of amphibians and reptiles, and (b) the persistence and determination necessary to be successful at doing what they want to do."
Keep in mind that many of the greats in herpetology were not professional academics - Kauffield was a plumber. I would consider anyone who takes the time to learn about reptiles and amphibians a herpetologist regardless of academic standing.
I'm not aware of any universities that offer an undergraduate major of "herpetology." Most professional herpetologists have degrees in Animal Science, Biology, Zoology or related disciplines.
Here is a good link that describes some of the job possibilities.. http://www.asih.org/pubs/herpjobs.htm
Hope this helps...
