It had a terrible allergic reaction to a tape measure, causing it to shrink to 40% of it's original length. Not an uncommon problem.

This subject was on the animal planet on Tuesday night. There is a tribe of people in Sumatra that worship a retic that is supposed to be 40 feet plus. This guy who works at a zoo, tried for a year to get these people to give him the snake. Well, after a year, the Sumatran people gave him a retic measuring 23-24 feet. So actually, people believe the Sumatran people gave this guy the biggest retic they could find in the wild, and kept the 40 footer for religious purposes. Bryan

I heard that after all the reporters left, they took the retic and cooked it and served it up with rice. It fed the whole village. JohnZ
