I've been keeping herps all my life and I just recently (about two years ago) started keeping venomous species. I currently own two Copperheads (Mally and Aramis) and am thinking of purchasing a Rhinoceros Viper (Bitis nasicornis). I was wondering if you guys have and tips for the keeping of these beautiful, yet potentially dangerous, creatures?

Hi Thomas,
I've not worked with B. nasicornis first hand, but I can give you a few of my observations...Like their larger cousins, B. gabonica, they seem to be fairly fragile snakes which are very succeptable to stress related diseases. Also, you'll likely have to soak them once a week for hydration.
A good friend of mine recieved a minor envenomation from one of his rhino vipers in his left index finger. His entire arm and half of the left side of his back swelled and the swelling did not reside for two weeks. Be careful.
Do you have a source of antivenom and a bite protocol ready in the event that you get tagged?
Cheers
Roger
