I agree with Chuck on this. When I was in nursing school, I had to pull clinical hours in the local ER. I asked the doctor on call if he treated many snake bites. We only have 2 vwnomous snakes in our area. These being coppers and timbers. The doctor replied, "No not many, the bites we sometimes treat are copperheads and they are nothing to be concerned about." I replied jokingly, "Remind me not to come here if I get bit." Hey Chuck, did you here about the guy who got bit on top on the hand by the timber in Bumpas Cove? He was picking moss in the mountains, placed his hand on a rock above his head and it tagged him. He made his way out of the mountains and was airlifted to our local Level 1 trauma center. 45 minutes post bite, he almost died. Email me if you come up to VA this summer so we can hunt a little. The hospitals around my area dont know much about snake bites. A woman got bit by a copperhead while stepping over the median in the walk way and nearly lost her leg. Another teenaged girl died a few miles up the road from my house from a Timber rattlesnake bite last summer. Copperhead bites arent too much to worry about because they can kept under control with supervision by a doctor, but if the doctor says that they are nothing to worry about and just leaves someone in the waiting room there are a number of things that could go wrong.

10/4 on the fact that some Doctors in this Country do not know a damn thing about Snake Bite. I know well that the Doctors that are on duty here in Limestone Co. Hospital, know less about Snake Bite than I do. I guess it is not uncommon for Doctors to make it threw Medical School without learning much about Snake Bite Prodical. I think the problem is that most Doctors in a ER Unit care less about the people in need. I see it as absolute ignorance, that a MD can work in a ER and not know the first damn thing about Snake Bites.....................Be safe ya’ll happy herping Wally

"TJ, this was a post in total ignorance. We all live at the area where TN, GA, and AL come together. The nearest ER’s to us are in Chattanooga, TN so we use them. He lives in GA. I happen to live in TN, but my collection is housed at secure climate controlled building in GA."
Perhaps you are right, but by the way the original post was written, one couldn't help but think that there was that chance.

i can't believe so many people missed chuck's point to the story.....
-the doctor assumed the patient was right
-the doctor assumed the situtation wasn't critical
-the doctor made a judgement call with only assumption to guide her
-doctors are not paid to make assumptions, they're paid to go off facts....that's why you have to fill out 3 pages worth of medical history, family history, insurance or not, address, etc......because they don't assume any of that stuff, they shouldn't assume anything else.........
anyone who defends the doctor is just plain stupid....if the doctor made a call without ever looking at the patient, then that's just 100% wrong.....they won't call in antibiotics for you if you call and tell them you have a sinus infection, will they?
why?
because they KNOW they can get SUED for malpractice if the patient is wrong......what's different about this?
the doctor went through years of training.....but took the word of someone else WITHOUT all that training?
that's wrong
and if it's wrong to treat hot keepers because it's a hobby, then next time you're in a car wreck, don't go to the hospital....lay in the road and bleed to death....hey, you CHOSE to get into that car.......right?
shit happens, that's why insurance is such a huge industry, so saying that they should put his problems aside, even momentarily, is crazy.......if you condemn him for his mistake, then you should condemn yourself next time ANYTHING bad happens to you.....you got sick because you touched that doorknob and didn't wash your hands......or because you breathed in the outside air without a mask.......
if they'll treat drunk drivers, then they SHOULD treat everyone else
