I posted regarding this topic .It concerns a male Hognose and his new tank, its been nearly 2 weeks but as a new turn of events in that he is very opaque and is definitely gonna shed, so it seems the best plan is to wait until he has shed before i try to feed him? THANKS keyz.

Kieron: Two weeks without feedinng is not a problem, especially with a new animal that is getting used to it`s cage, qne possibly nearing shedding.
I wonder just what you are trying to feed it. Here in the states, hognosed snakes eat mostly toads, although some have been conditioned to eat mice, or froggs. Are you feeding American Toads over there in England?
What are you trying to feed him ?

Hi CRO im currently feeding FT mice small size as his care sheet that i got from the supplier states he was feeding reliably on FT mice, if say he refuses further on is there any way that i can collect some american toad species for food ie does anywhere supply them? He is a C.B. animal but i have no REAL paperwork i think he was farm bred but am not sure , Also he showed alot of interest in his food last try but then his belly turned opaque then eyes etc. He should complete his shed today hopefully. Thanks for the time cro cheers
KIERON.

Kieron: I would wait until the snake sheads before trying to feed him again. The Western Hognosed Snake is more often known to eat mice than the Eastern or Southern variety. That he shows interest in the food items is a good sign. I do not know where you might get American Toads, but you might try finding a frog, and rubbing frog scent on the thawed mouse you are trying to feed him. JohnZ

Well I have had a little girl western for about four years now... got her as a tiny little neonate. I love them! ... and in all the time I have had her the only times she has gone off feed was before her shed (sometimes lasting up to a month or more of not eating).... although there are frequent times that she had fast sheds and ate right through until her eyes clouded over... So in response to your question I would wait until you find a shed skin in the cage and offer food after that. I would generally hold off on scenting any mice unless the post-shed meal was refused. Hope this helps.
