The question you aren't asking, is "how did he end up on TV?" I'll tell you. They came looking for him, not vice versa. Mark knows his stuff. Period. People within the venomous snake community picked up on that a long time ago. Of all of the television personalities with an actual series that deals with snakes, Mark is the only published herpetologist among them. National Geographic of course had it's series called, "Snake Wranglers", which highlighted many herpetologists, several of whom are my friends. But none of them have a series....yet.
Mark's definitely not "up his own arse" as you put it. He is invited to reptile expos by "people in the know" because of his reputation with both professional and amateur herpetologists alike. Don't try to take anything away from him. He definitely knows his stuff and has earned his reputation. If you make the type of statements or ask questions as you have, you simply haven't done your homework.
If you really want to know the "why", have a look at his book, "The Snakes Papua New Guinea", then get back to me.

Anonymous,
That's it?!? O'Shea's "up his own ass" because he does book signings? Geez, no wonder you don't want people to know who you are.

Boy, you really hit the nail on that one Bill. If this site got rid of anonymous posting it would draw a great crowd, but since it does why waste the time! Talking crap is fine by me, but put your name done and stand behind yourself. You can always pull IPN? That's really fun. Tim Friede(I like Mark).

I fail to see the point. The man is a man, period. He is quite an accomplished herpetologist at that, and far more so than you obviously will ever be seeing that you can't even seem to place your name on a simple posting. Nobody ever claimed O'Shea to be anything other than an accomplished herpetologist who simply was asked to do some television work along the way. Hey, why not? It seems to be you, and potentially some others that have problems with him, Irwin, Corwin, Fowler, Perkins and all the others that have done this through the years. Get over it. If you truly have a problem with the way he does things, be it television or publications, then get out there and top it yourself. The great thing about America, and science in general, is everyone has the ability to go on out and do it better should they have that ability. We'll all be watching for your work soon. Please be sure to give us a name though so we'll know it's you...mmmmm...kay?
