Hi all could anyone please tell me there best methods for marking snakes so as I can track certain animals back etc. I have heard that branding is becoming useful! I am heavilly tattooed and would not be happy to inflict this pain on a snake/reptile.tatooing is painful branding is bloody painful! The species in question is difficult as it is slowworms and they are very similar to glass lizards so scale removal is painful and damaging to the animal, so all help needed to see if re-location is working thanks regards,Kieron.

I tried nail pollish with adders and it didn`t work. Slow worms are not snakes, by the way. Anguis fragilis is in the family Anguidae, Suborder Sauria(Lacertilia) aka Lizards - Order Squamata. Take care...

The method that I learned in veterinary technician school is to clip the scutes with a very fine (and sharp)pair of surgical scissors. This method has been used at zoological institutions and will permanently mark the reptile. I would perform this procedure immediately after shedding has occured. Ater the scute(s) have been clipped, apply neosporin to the site to speed up the healing process. Additionally I would use sterile paper (wax paper wiped down with a diluted bleach solution should work fine) as a substrate to prevent any infection during the healing process.

Scott`s Idea of spray paint works quite well. It will last `till the next shead, and if it is on the rattles of a rattlesnake, will last much longer.

Kieron: I think you are being a little harsh on the comments made by Alex. You were the first to post the statement `What is the best way to mark a snake`. You did not say `What is the best way to mark a lizard or What is the best way to mark a sloworm`. Of course most folks know the difference, but since you said `snake`, you set yourself up for criticism. Alex answered based on what you said.
Look, we are all friends here, even when we dissagree on things, and should get along. Now that the annomous posting is gone, it should help a lot.
We welcome and enjoy your comments here, and look forward to more in the future. But, please realize that the annomous folks who criticized you in the past are gone, and that when folks like Alex question your statements / questions, it is in good nature, and not meaning to offend. Please realize that there is somewhat of a confusion that happens when folks from all over the world post, also. The way things in language are interpreted varies a great deal between folks in Europe, Africa, Asia, India, and Latin America. Please try to not get offensive when someone questions your post. I hope you understand what I am trying to say, as it means no offense at all, and I have greatly enjoyed your past posts, but what you said to Alex seemed that you were criticizing him for pointing out the difference betweem lizards and snakes, and that is just not right.
Best Regards JohnZ

I wasn`t making any strikes. Sorry if I made it look that way. I was also telling any one who was going to answer your question that slow worms are not snakes. Maybe not everybody knows this.
Best regards, Alex S.

Freeze branding is a fairly good way to permanently mark most reptiles and amphibians. I can't remember the specific citation, but I beleive that it is supposed to be less traumatic than hot branding or tatooing IF YOU DO IT RIGHT. If you have a ton of extra cash laying around, PIT tags are really nice. If you are going to freeze brand, though, try to get someone knowledgeable in the technique to show you how first. Best of luck.
