I just read the below ridiculous article which made me start doing a little research. I'm unable to find any recorded or reported deaths from a Cottonmouth bite. Does anyone know of a confirmed case? I found plenty of articles reporting they are deadly if not treated but no cases of actual deaths. I've only found 2 deaths from Copperheads the those were suspect due to the poor health of the persons bitten.

Hay David, I personally have heard of a (A. piscivorus) death. Now this was from a Local Person, that I have known for a Few Years. I can’t conform this death, but other than Hear-Say, I have never read or known of a Death from the above Species. I know that Cottonmouth Venom can be very destructive, I know that it causes Bad Necrosis and it has a lasting effect on the Person Bitten. I will check around a little more, if I find something I will let you know..........Be Safe Ya’ll, Happy Herping : Wally

Ok, I just got a reply from the paper that printed the story. They said the headline of "Deadly Texas snake caught in Plumsted" is accurate. They were able to tell that is was a Texas snake by telling it that it was up by 2 runs in the World Series which it responded by letting a White Sock score 5 runs in a row. I'm satisfied that the paper did everything in it's power to authenticate the story.

David, the article you mentions was discussed a while back on kingsnake.com. Phobos got the editor of the paper to send him a copy of the photo (not in the web version) and as we all expected, it was a water snake (probably a northern).

I'm not surprised. I don't know what bugs me more, the fact that they're blaming Texas or the reporter was so blatantly lazy.

I'm no expert, but check out Robert Norris' chapter "Venomous Poisoning by North American Reptiles" (p.706) found in Campbell and Lamar's Venomous Reptiles of the Western Hemispere(2004). He cites several articles (at least one medical journal) to support the prop. that there have been deaths caused by A.Pisc.

David, in this case I wouldn't entirely blame the reporter, since it was identified for them by local animal control.
Also, the editor has promised a followup article (an article, not once sentence on the back page) correcting it. Last I heard from her she was trying to contact the animal control guy for comment...

I read the earlier post as well. I do recall reading an article last year saying that a young girl was fatally bitten by a cottonmouth, but I can't remember when the article was posted, so I didn't comment on it.
Wes Von Papineau on the ks.com forum would be the best person to ask. I think he may have been the one who posted the article, but not positive.
