I have an adult male WC horned viper. I have noticed some different feeding behaviors and was just wondering if somebody out there has noticed the same types of behaviors.
Most of the times that he feeds he will grab and hold the prey item (similar to my Bitis), but this last feeding he struck and released the prey item, then approached afterwards and consumed (like my Crotes).
I at first I thought that prey size might of had something to do with it, but he has struck and held larger prey....
I don't know. Any thoughts out there?

Hi:
My C. cerastes will sometimes bite & hold, sometimes bite & release. She will even take the F/T food every so gently off my forceps. I've not noticed any pattern to any of their feeding modes. I important point is that they feed normally.

Thanks for replying Al. He does feed frequently, and as a matter of fact, he is quite a pig.
I guess it all depends on their "mood".
Thanks,
Michael

The 3 Cerastes I used to feed at the Atlanta Zoo would grab and hold the prey item about half the time, and strike and release the other half of the time.
I never observed much of a pattern or preference, except that maybee when they were in a really bad mood, they might have used bite and hold slightly more often.
There might have been a slight preference for bite and release, when the food item was presented head first to them, and bite and hold, when the food item was presented body first.
I think I also noticed a tendency to bite and hold more often if there were two snakes sharing a cage.
That is something you might want to experiment with and see if you notice a trend.
Best Regards JohnZ
