I had fun attending the Lowcountry Reptile Expo and SHHS Banquet. Hope everyone had a safe trip home.
Got to see some old friends, and got to meet people in person that I only knew from the internet site.
I got to flip some tin on the way, and find some new roads to cruise, which is always good.
Seems like we are on the right track by appointing Roark Ferguson, of Roark's Reptile Safari, as the South Carolina State Representative of the Southeastern Hot Herp Society.
We had very interesting speakers in Dean Ripa and Chris Harper at the Banquet.
Overall, a good show and weekend.
Now, a few observations that I think would have made the show and banquet even better. Please do not think that I am bitching and complaining, as I am not. I am just pointing out things, that if changed, would, in my opinion, make the show even better in the future.
Charleston is a very long drive for most people. Many people justified it by knowing they could flip tin and possible road cruise along the way. However, mid-March is often too early for this, as we saw by the cold, wind, and rain. If you must have the show in Charleston, make it a month later, when the weather is going to probably be much better for herping, or vistiting Historic Charleston.
Better yet, move the show to Columbia, which is a much better location to drive to for members in Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Tennassee, and Alabama.
Exchange Park. The location worked well enough, but if all of the vendors on the list had shown up, it would have been way to crowded in that building. A bigger area would work better for that.
I liked having the vendors in the ``squares`` of tables instead of long rows. Some of the vendors did not like it, but the customer is always right, LOL.
The Speaker System in the building Sucked. When the announcements for Roark`s, or Dr. Seashole`s live shows were made, no one could understand them. I know I have very poor hearing, so each time, I asked many others there what the announcements said, and not anyone I spoke with were able to understand the announcments. This probably kept many, many people from knowing that the live shows were starting.
The SHHS Table needed more chairs, as did all of the vendor sites. We also needed Membership applications to give out to the many people who asked for them, and the ability to sign up members right then and there. We also could have had sheets that people could have signed to help in the SC fight for keeping reasonable reptile laws. We could have also had a map to the Banquet that could have been handed out to members, to make it easier to find.
Speaking of the Banquet, well it worked well enough.
The food was good quality. The biggest problem was that there were no doors on the meeting room, so the noise from the rest of the building made it difficult to hear Dean and Chris. It did not help to have the Chinese lady sitting in the back corner clanking silverware for half an hour. It would also be nice if we could have seen a slide show of Dean`s Bushmasters and Chris`s trip to Sri Lanka. I have heard that in the past that slide shows were part of the presentations.
Thanks again to everyone who helped make this a successfull show and banquet. I am not trying to start a thread here for people to complain, as overall, things went very well. I am just trying to offer suggestions that will help make things even better at future shows.
Best Regards JohnZ

It was very nice to finally meet you after the banquet John. I did enjoy the weekend very much but a shorter drive and a month later would have made things even better. As far as having memberships available at the SHHS table, I was told by Chris H. that memberships are not being offered at the present time. He said Karl will be back in about 10 months. When this happens maybe the newsletter can get started again and a little restructuring take place and memberships may resume. A lot of the gripes you have seem valid to me. Lets not sit around and wait on everyone else to fix the problems though. We are all part of this society so we should all have a hand in it. If there's anything I can do to help now or in the future just let me know.

I actually had the slide show of my trip to Sri Lanka in my pack - on CD. But we didn't have a laptop and powerpoint projector. Besides, it would have taken HOURS for me to tell the story. I'm so long winded!!!

Chris: It would have been great to have spent hours watching your slide show of Sri Lanka !
We could have taken a break every hour or so to raid the buffet, LOL !
On a cold, windy, and rainey winter SC night, what better thing could a bunch of herpers do ?
Of course, the folks running the restaraunt might have not liked us staying `till 3:00 a.m. !
Best Regards JohnZ
