Fill out your profile, please. Crotalus horridus and C. adamanteus shouldn't hybridize naturally. They a very different species. If they did mate and produce fertile offspring within their natural range, then they would be the same snake ( like the old canebrake/timber controversy)

I do know they occur, especially in South Carolina. A good friend has found three in seperate areas from Hardeeville over to Beaufort. This has been years apart so they do interbreed. I have been on a quest to locate some ever since I saw the one on display at the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia SC.

Has anyone described this in a journal? How do we know its a hybrid? Has anyone done DNA analysis, or do we just think they're hybrids based on their appearance. Where are some pics that I could see? Now you've gone and gotten me curious.

Dick Bartlett had a group of neonates delivered at one of the Gainesville Herp Society meeting one night in a five gallon bucket. Hopefully he photographed at least one. Bill Cope verified they were hybrids also and thought Dick had kept one. I will have to call Dick and ask him myself.
