Has anybody read the book "There's a Hair in My Dirt" by Gary Larson? He's the guy who does all of the Far Side cartoons. It's a hilarious book that should supplement every biology text at every college in the world. If you've never read it find a copy. I'll take you ten minutes to read, and 30 minutes to stop lauging. I won't tell you the whole story, but I will reveal my favorite part. There is a princess walking though the woods. She loves nature (but has NO understanding of it). As her trip comes to an end she sees a horrifying sight! A snake (looks like a scarlet) is squeezing the life out of a poor helpless mouse. Like any good princess she immediatly bashes the life right out of the snake and picks up the barely-living mouse. Moved by her own selfless act of bravery and the the mouse's grateful squeek, she wipes a tear away from her eye. Good has triumphed over evil...
but actually the snake was an important rodent predator. The mouse that she rescued was harboring a virus that entered the princess when she wiped the tear from her eye. One beautiful spring morning the princess emerges from her home in a fever, falls over, and dies. The End.
You MUST read this book!

I'm not 100% positive, but I think Larsen is an entomologist as well as a cartoonist. If it's not entemology, it's biology or something in the life-sciences.

I just tried to look it up and couldn't find anything about him being an entomologist or biologist. Seems a teacher had told me that a long time ago. He still had a species of louse named after him though lol.

As I recall, Gary Larsen is an amateur herpetologist. He's kept a few snakes off & on for years. One of his old cartoons shows a sky diving school opening up right next to Crutchfield's Crocodile Farm.(More Trouble Brewing) Most people outside Florida would not get that one, but Tom Crutchfield raised gators & crocs for many years in central Florida.

That book is a classic. It has been around a few years. We used it at my last zoo in the education department. I think Gary Larsen was schooled as a biologist, but never actually worked as one. I know he does have 2 insects named after him.
