i cant remember if i already asked this on here or not. if i did, please forgive me lol.
i was wondering if any of you use Animal Plastics cages for your hots. i only have one T-10 with sliding glass doors at the moment for one of my boas but i like them and im planning to stick with them when i get more cages in the future. i know most plastic cages are good for hots, but i wanted to get some personal experiences from people that keep hots in AP's.

Dylan,
I know of a couple of our site members that use and swear by these cages. E-mail our,"Venomous News Items" manager, Thomas E. He has a couple of them and can give you a more in-depth review than I. His e-mail is:w0313112@selu.edu . Also there is a review of these cages at:http://www.venomousreptiles.org/reviews/detail/147
Sincerely,
Todd

I can tell you first hand that these cages are great. I do not currently have any but I have seen Thomas' cages and I know for a fact he will be staying with AP cages. They are inexpensive, shipping is cheap and you just can't beat them.
If you're using them for venomous make sure you get the sliding doors with the lock (the lock is great)

i have one of them right now with sliding glass doors and a lock and i agree they are great, but is there some reason you wouldnt recommend keeping hots in the ones with drop down doors?

I am thinking of getting some, they look better than boaphile. I would get the drop down doors not the sliding as most sliding doors are hard to close with a hook.

thats exactly what i was thinking. but as long as the snake is completely inside the cage and you open the outer door i think you should be able to close it with your hand without entering the snakes strike range.

The reason I use and prefer sliding doors instead of drop down doors is fairly simple. It provides you a more controlled opening. With a drop down door it's either open or it's closed, you can try opening it a little bit to reach in with tongs and grab something, but opening it wide enough from the top to accomodate removing something from the cage leaves openings in both of the sides and the top. Even if you have a hook in one hand if a snake comes charging out you have 2 choices, try to manuver the snake with one hand while your other hand is holding the door in position....or drop the door open completely giving the snake a larger opening and exposing yourself to the snake very quickly.
With sliding doors, they allow you to open the door only as far as needed leaving only that amount open with both hands free. If the snake comes charging at you in this case, you can have both hands one to manuver the snake with the hook and the other to slide the door shut, you can also stand to the sode of the opening behind the door leaving yourself out of striking range while still being able to safely slide the door closed.
Again, this is just my opinion and everyone has there prefrences. The majority of venomous keepers I know use sliding doors vs. the drop down type.

ok i see what you mean and it makes sense to want to have both hands free and be able to adjust how open the door is. thanks for the opinion.

I would have echo Eric's above statement in regards to the sliding versus opening door issue, for reasons previously stated. It's just not worth the risk.
Secondly, and most importantly, I suggest incorporating a trap box in any cage that is housing a venomous species. With a sliding door set up you can open the the cage slightly to enable you to close the trapbox using a hook, thus eliminating a possible strike. Remember when it comes to hots: What's easiest takes a back seat to what's safer.
Just my .02,
Todd
