baby copperhead?

Hello, my son caught what a neighbor said was a baby copperhead. It was about 18 in. long, had v shaped bands on the top which were brown with a black border, the bands on the sides were brownish red and the belly has thin bands of yellow and black in the shape of trianges, the yellow triangles being larger than the black, he found it by a lake near our house in new bern, nc. any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks, heather

doesn't sound like one

Depending on how I interpret your description, it could possibly be a copperhead, but more likely a Northern Watersnake (probably the snake most often mistaken for a copperhead)...at least up to the belly description, but they are quite variable. Take a look at some of the pictures on these pages:

yeah, it sounds like a light phase of some sort of watersnake, i catch them all the time, fisty but harmless
