My sources tell me the Animal Protection Institute and the NC Zoo are actively shopping for a new sponsor for their Exotic Animal Ban. They hope to introduce it on the floor of the General Assembly in Raleigh come the early session of 2007. The Animal Rights Movement can not be handed another victory in the South. Too many states have gone down without a fight. DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN IN NC!!
If you care about this hobby:
* Join NCARK at http://www.ncark.org/join.php
* Follow this link to find out who your Senator and Representatives are http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/
* Write (don't email)and call them. Let them know you are against the AR agenda of ending hunting, fishing, livestock farming and private animal ownership in NC.
* Tell them you will be very unpleased if they choose to sponsor such a bill.
This is a link to API's most recent mischief here in NC:

The API will continue to do this until they try to get every state that has no regulations in place banned. If you look on the API website, you will see it is their mission to change legislation in regarding exotic animals nationwide.

Just for the record, the incident mentioned in the last link concerning the Charlotte Metro Zoo proves that no new legislation is needed. The "gentleman' in question had lost his USDA licenses to keep big cats because of his poor husbandry and care prior to this raid. The raid was because of reports of illegal native rattlesnakes... which were confiscated. He was also arrested and charged in connection with approximately 1oz of heroin in his possession. In other words our current laws worked sufficiently to get this scumbag and his substandard operation shut down. The AR spin on this is all just an effort to stir up support for the agenda of ending private ownership of exotics by equating ownership with with cruelty. API is promoting a video propaganda piece painting the picture that keeping exotics, in and of itself, equates with animal cruelty... unless of course you are their activists at the AZA sanctioned NC Zoo at Asheboro.

I can't stand their stupid agenda's....less people keeping exotic's + more people going to the zoo to see animals that they can't keep = more money for the institute's. However, more bans + less people keeping exotic's = me not supporting the institute's and spending more money finding these animals in the field, rather than behind glass. It's simple, stop supporting the people who are trying to end our passion's. It's not about us keeping these animals, it's about the money they gain to make by us having to go to a zoo to see them. However, a zoo doesn't really have anything I haven't seen before or am impressed by, but there are quite a few keepers here that do have animals that impress me. I don't need to go to a zoo and spend the money to see snakes that I can see anytime.

I am sure AZA, and zoos around the country will mourn your loss.
And what does AZA have to do with the "sanctioned" NC Zoo? The NC Zoo belongs to the AZA, period. Other than that the Director can speak his "personal" mind on whatever subject he desires. It has nothing to do with AZA as an entity. I really wish people would have at least some sense about what they are begrudging before they go tearing into something. If AZA was after the private herp trade, trust me folks, you wouldn't be seeing a little snippet in the Hick-ville Times. Geeeeeze, use your heads for once.

Doug- We have had this discussion before... and I don't wish to revisit it. We agree on most points, but you have a bad habit of belittling and calling names when someone expresses facts or opinion that don't sit well with you.
The facts are this: 1. AZA is excepted in the API bill. Not just in NC but everywhere it has been introduced. What the nature of the relationship between API and AZA is I don't know, but I would like to know. 2. The NC Zoo at Asheboro is an AZA institiution. 3. David Jones is the Director of the NC Zoo and is also an activist for API.
I am not presenting some kind of paranoid conspiracy theory... just 3 simple facts. So if you feel the need to rain insults on me because we don't see eye to eye on this issue, go right ahead. I will not dignify your lack of manners with a response. Debate can be civilized...

Again, AZA is NOT pushing this bill. Period. Now AZA may have had their "name" drawn up in it someplace as AZA does have its own stance on some forms of exotics (which stop short at the herps). API may simply want to take that tired old statement and try to use that to their advantage as all AR groups use any piece of anything that they think might gain them a foothold. It may behoove folks to learn a little more about their Animal Rights adversaries and how they actually work if they truly hope to defeat them. But it is NOT AZA's policy to back AR groups or to become involved in local bans especially regarding animal ban legislations on a private level. It's not only not in their interest but not smart.
As I said before, if the Director of a Zoo wants to do his own thing, on his own agenda, that's his right to do so. Zoos are independent entities with their own boards, or City to run them. The AZA in no way runs a zoo, nor do they want to. AZA has nothing to do with that, that's not what they are about.
On the other matter, I certainly do not have way of attacking those who don't agree with me. I welcome a good debate and always have. On the other hand, if someone chooses to come out of the gate swinging, they can, and had better expect, to get swung back at with the right information. Period. There were two posts in a row attacking AZA and one outright attacking zoos. How was that a "debate". It didn't warrant a "kind" remark. Attack and why not expect to be countered? Don't be surprised when it happens from my end. It had nothing to do with my not “agreeing with another’s opinion. It had to do with the facts and I will ensure that they are represented straightforward.

Andrew-
I just went and read your link discussing the bill. In API's news release they also mention that the USDA is opposed to keeping exotics. That in and of itself should clue people in the know off to the article's inaccuracies. The USDA is the be all end all governing body over keeping exotics and they also control over zoos and aquariums. If the USDA had issue with exotics there would BE NO EXOTICS. The exception being birds and herps as they do not govern those) The article is nothing more than a propaganda news release put out by the API and written by API staff. I actually find it amusing that they would even attempt to list USDA in their bill, although again, this is how they work. Rest assured, the entire statement was BS. USDA has no issue with private keeping and if they did, there would be no debate, they would simply pull everyone's permit and shut them down.
Take a deep breath and learn your opponent. Learn their tactics and when they are just blowing smoke out their ass.
