You would think that an august and authoritative body like National Geographic could get it right. It's not just the instant demise that concerns me. This person clearly has no idea what the prefix "mono" means.

Outfits like National Geographic and Animal Planet make all kinds of errors in their films. I guess the people editing and writing the films are not professionals in the wildlife sciences.
It will get a lot worse after this weekend when the Snakes on a Plane movie comes out.
We are about to be flooded with all kinds of bad journalism and sensationalism as the journalists attempt to write about the snakes in the movie.

That movie is going to be a nightmare. On a TV show they presented a trailer that depicted a frenetic gaboon viper (computer generated) attacking a woman with the sustained ferver of a mamba on PCP. Quite a feat for a sedentary ambush predator!

I think I'm developing a phobia of Sammuel L. Jackson. The thought of him close to snakes makes my skin crawl!

At the risk of being bombarded here, let me toss this one out here.....
I don't see the problem with "Snakes On A Plane" that so many seem to be getting bent out of shape about. It's a movie, and a cheesy action/horror flick at that. Everyone knows that from the onset, they know what they are going to see, what they are getting themselves ready to watch, basically what they are paying to see......cheesy, action, unrealistic, fiction. The people buying tickets for this are not going to be blindsided and surprised and horrified to the point of having nightmares of snakes awaiting them around every corner. They know what this movie is....a movie. They aren't going to take it for anything more than what it is. They aren’t going to buy into the snake frenzy and go home with some heightened fear of serpents anymore than they now refuse to attended Christmas parties or enter High-rise building because of going to see "Die Hard". The ones who want to see it for what it is and have fun, will see it. Those who could care less, and don't necessarily like snakes, or Sam Jackson, won't. It's like all movies, a target audience.
Personally I think the movie will be a hoot, and myself and everyone at the zoo plans to see it all together in one night as a fun and laughable event, the way the movie is meant to be actually. Have fun with it, but it's certainly not going to be the end of snake-dom as we know it. It's not bad PR for snakes. It's a movie with snakes. Not an Oscar-winner I'm sure, but probably worth the money for the chuckles.

I completely agree with Doug and would add that virtually everthing I've seen related to the movie seems to be stirring up genuine (positive) interest in snakes more than anything else.
Did anyone else see the episode of Attack of the Show on G4 where the hosts did (mostly) the entire show from a couch surrounded by snakes (some of them rubber)? They seemed really nervous at the beginning but before long they were handling the snakes and being goofy with them. It wasn't perfect, but I thought it was actually a pretty good message and pretty representative of what happens when people actually spend a little time around snakes. (A far better message than NG saying you'll die instantly from a monocled cobra!)

I agree that the movie will be a lot of fun to see.
Probably way better than the Anaconda movie that came out a few years ago.
Hopefully, it will generate positive news coverage for snakes, I just have some doubts. I have already read a few news reviews about the snakes they used in the movie, and they talked about how dangerous it was working with the Yellow Rat Snakes, and about how Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes often attack people!
I dont trust journalists to get things right, but I guess we will know soon enough.

the people who made the movie actually sent like a thousand cheap endorsements to our herpsociety and the "exclusive 5 minute sneek peak" that they sent us was shown at the meeting, the laughs were hysterical, 90% of the snakes were computer generated (poorly).
i think that it will cause a hype in media but wether it will be good or not, we will just have to see
best regards,

I think there's plenty of people that already believe snakes behave the way this movie will portray them. If one has been educated as to the behavior of snakes (or how they would act on a plane) before they watch the movie then they could laugh at it and call it a comedy. But otherwise I think it may be more fuel for the fire of hatred and fear.

I think that you are all grossly underestimating the level of ignorance out there. There are MANY people out there who already have major misconceptions about snakes that will only be reinforced by that movie, no matter how cheezy the CGI are. I still get several serious questions every year about the movie Anaconda - "Anacondas get to be 100' right? Yes they do! I saw it on a movie."
This behavior isn't limited to students, either. I heard another teacher tell her students that you can't kill a snake by cutting it in half - it would just grow back. I pulled her aside and corrected her, but the damage was already done.
I guess that the end result here, though, is that the movie is here, whether we like it or not. More ignorance and DUMB questions to tactfully and gently answer.
