Last Night I went on a 2-Hour Drive with a Flashlight, shining it off into the Swamps to see what was moving about. I ended up seeing 8 Cottonmouth and Catching 3 “was a very good Night”. I don’t know why, but this Year has been the best Year I have ever had for finding Cottonmouth “even with this Year being so Hot and Dry”. In any case, the only thing I can figure is that the lack of Rain has driven all the Aquatic Snakes into these little Pools that remain, but, I am not complaining by any means. The 3 I caught last were all in good condition, and Fat as all get out. Out of the ones I caught 1 was over 3 Ft. long, and had the most Beautiful Dark Red Color I have seen in a long time.
I have not had any luck getting Pictures of Venomous Snakes either. I am beginning to wonder if the Snakes know you have a Camera, and Hide. Sometimes I swear they do “LOL”.
I have been wondering if anyone else has had such good luck finding Cottonmouth this Year? I also have not seen that many Terrestrial Species this Summer, wile Riding the Roads at Night. Have any of you had any good Luck this Year Wile Riding? .......................Be Safe Ya’ll, Happy Herping : Wally

I've caught over 100 cottonmouths this summer (and missed a few too). It's been a good year for cottonmouths and copperheads, but I have seen NO Crotalids or Sistrurus. :(
On the non-venomous side I have seen tons of rat snakes and Nerodia, but very few king snakes. It has been a very odd year.

I've managed to catch two adult Cottonmouth, four Pygmy rattlesnakes and one HUGE gravid Eastern Diamondback. The only reason I removed the EDB was that she was living under a boardwalk at a local condo (right on the beach here in St. Augustine)and the maintenance guy told me straight up that if I didn't take her, she'd be dead before I left the parking lot. I don't argue with idiots so I took her...
Lot's of racers and other non venemous stuff up this year, too.

i've noticed this in the swamp i herp in; the dryer it is, the more "together" they are....after that rain we had here in limestone county about 10 or so days ago, the swamps are up some but the cottons scattered......the place i went before the rain and saw around 20 within 50 sq yds had 1 or 2 today.....i can stil find them, but they're all over now.....like it sparked them to move, but they're probably getting ready to have babies too, so maybe that's a factor......i've had no luck in madison or limestone county with rattlers or copperheads other than the one cane i caught a couple months back, but i'm gonna take my daughter and nephew to the swamps tomorrow to see some wild cottons and to hang out canoeing.....i know i'll see at least 10-20 in a rather short time......they're healthy and everywhere it seems.....
wally, we should get together, i've got a place you may wanna check out that maybe isn't to far away fro you....near redstone arsenal where zierdt rd and james record intersect, there is a swamp in the middle of a subdivision called "the reserve" and on the james record end of it, cottons are EVERYWHERE.....even barred owls, tons of blue and green herons, tons of species of turtles, pike, bass (even seen some patternless largemouth), and who knows what else......

Ricky : sounds like a nice place. Would love to try and plane a run, who knows we could end up with the mother load “LOL”.
I have noticed a lot more Cottonmouth this Year than last Year. I tend to agree with you, the lack of Rain could be the Factor.
By the way, how many Pregnant Females have you found this Year? The big one I caught the other Night was Very close to giving Birth. Her back side was Fat as all get out “full of Young”. Maybe we can get lucky enough to find some New Borns this Year. ........................Be Safe Ya’ll, Happy Herping : Wally

Ive found a good couple hundred this summer and I was only hunting for them for about 2 weeks of the summer. The fall always produces more so would not be surprised if I found much much more. Herp Time.

Sounds like ya'll have had a good year.
My only concern would be to make sure that your not harming the snakes. I mean, are they better or worse off than before you came into contact with them?
I can tell that ya'll genuinely love them so i just felt obligated to ask.
What do you do with so many of them? And believe me being the damp rag and raining on your parade isn't my style. I'm just curious. If i lived in Mississippi where there wasn't the restrictive laws like TN i'd try to purchase a few from ya'll.[after i had more info for the snakes well-being]
Ya'll realize that all types will read this thread and wonder these same things i've asked. And some types would read it and figure, "There oughta be a law!" I mean a few snakes is one thing but a 100?
ME?, I'M FOR FREEDOM! For us and the snakes and a natural world. I don't feel it harms any critters to keep a few examples, they may be the only ones left wih man's encroachment on their world and especially the way wetlands are raped, drained and murdered[yeah, i know how those human terms sound applied to wetlands, but imagine we're the critters and our homes are destroyed, it would seem as dire as rape and murder..]
These are just my thoughts reading this thread. I'd like some pro or con feedback if ya'll feel like it.
Anyways...SEE YA!

Steve: I also believe in Conservation, and I don’t remove the Snakes I find considering it’s near impossible for me to Keep any Snakes at this time. I am a Truck Driver, so you see, I wouldn’t have time to care for them anyway. I only go out looking for the Snakes in my area, to document what is still around, and see if the Health of the Snakes is good.
I do believe in leaving most of the Snakes I find, were I found them. I some cases tho, I do remove them because the areas are so populated with People, that if I left them there they would be Killed for sure.
I know its hard to understand why some of us do this but, it is better to move them than to just leave them in a place you know they will surely be Killed. I don’t know how many times I have seen Cottonmouth, Water Snakes, Garter Snakes, Corn Snakes and Rat Snakes Dead on the Bank of a Local Fishing Hole. This is my reason for relocating some of the Snakes I find “good reason, wouldn’t you agree”?
So, you see why we do what we do?
