Hey Wally, thanks for getting back with me.
What you said is the best answer i coulda hoped for. I too put the snakes welfare above my own fascination or someone else's fear. I'll move them in a heart beat and kinda feel a kinship with them while doing so.
The reason i learned to get along with them years ago was because most of the people who's ignorant idea's i couldn't abide with also hated snakes. Plus it seemed every time i turned around in the area's i liked to explore i'd run into a snake. Or i'd wake up and have one 1 foot off my nose looking at me. Or in the tent with me....Or on the other side of the tree i was sitting against....
So i started learning all i could about my 'enemy' and before long i started seeing the UTTER BEAUTY in them. Especially the venomous ones.
It has always seemed that there has been a copperhead somewhere close to me and it doesn't take long to appreciate their beauty. But it has always been the Cottonmouth that has intrigued me most. Every since one was bulldozed up behind our house and my 6 or 7 year old self looked down right into his mouth and he scared me to death. The way they'll stand their ground.
Years later[about 4 yrs ago]i was bitten on the ring finger after losing my balance jumping off a creek bank and shoving my hand into a brush pile as i fell and the Cotton got me quick and then slid into the water. He was about 18 inchs long. The bite swelled and then went away after a couple days. He didn't envenomate me[maybe residue],just made me less fearful of an unintentional bite. And as anyone who's watched a Cotton slide across the water surface knows, he wasn't mistaken from a water snake.
You seem like my kind of people, Wally. Be careful as we know what our friends can do if they wanna get us good.....[But watch out for crazy drivers as thats your constant danger, i was a truck driver also].
Hope we can talk again.
steve
