@ Rob Carmichael: is that gabby the one you have on display at your place? The one that was found in the dumpster in Chicago?
Back on topic, I agree that there are a few dealers who are shady and will try and make a quick buck by selling a Naja naja to a 16 year old kid, which is 100% wrong. But Im sure alot of you will agree that any reputable vendor will require proof of age, permit, etc. Most are quite knowledgeable about state-by-state laws as well.
But its the people who willingly and illegally buy the banned animals that put the hobby most at risk. There was somebody out here in the Chicago suburbs that got caught with two 9' American 'gators, a Taipan and a Paki cobra and he got busted. Scott Ballard of the IDNR was there I believe and it made local news all over. I believe Rob ended up with the Pakistani cobra (forget the Latin name at the moment)... THATS the kind of undisciplined actions that will lead to this hobby's demise. Mark my words.

like with EVERYTHING else, it's lack of concern for possible consequences and nothing else. i'm concerned with dying or killing my family, so i avoid that scenario. it's no different than driving, gun ownership, large dog ownership, etc. the problem is that there needs to be ONE system set up nationwide because the hobby would benefit from it. it should include not only venomous, but boids over 8' as well as crocodilians. an angry 12' retic is easily as deadly as a 4' egyptian cobra. i'm personally more comfortable with a manageable hot than something that can simply overpower me. with regulation like what driving has, you'll have fewer mishaps and more informed keepers. now, there are flaws with the drivers licensing system, but that's due to deterioration associated with age and idiots that couldn't pass the test on an annual basis to start with.
i'm all for regulation because some things require it, but banning is cheating the responsible people out of things and doing nothing is dangerous.

Ricky:
I agree with you. One thing makes me nuts: somebody other than me getting bit by one of my snakes. If I get bit, that goes with the turf. I accept that. No one else should be put at risk by my animals.

Again thoes are the reasons I dont own any venomous. Laws, even if it were legal I still wouldnt own them until I lived on my own due to the fact that I live under the same roof as my mom and my 12 year old sister who I have also taught everything she has learned and is willing to lear about reptilians. It is irresponsible and completely rediculous to endanger others in the household. I believe through eduacation and proper laws, legalizing venomous, large constrictors, and crocodilians can be benificial. But proper regulations must be followed and thoes not willing to abide by these laws must suffer more harsh of consiquenses as they otherwise would. But since our current law makers here in IL could care less others who would keep resonsibly have to suffer thhe consiquences. Like Ricky said bans just prevent responsible people from enjoying their hobbies.
And Rob you found a gabby in a dumpster downtown. Thats just plain scary....
Thanks
- Eric
