2 months ago, i bought 2 burmese pythons.
the female, looked very unhealthy, skin was saggy, she was very thin, sluggish and wouldnt eat.
I figured, okay, ill buy her anyway and nurse her to health.
that very night she had prolapsed rectum, it was so bad the vets suggested putting her down, i searched for days for a better alternative, found none, so down she went, to end the suffering.
well, the male who has appeared healthy this entire time, has suddenly lost weight, is sluggish, and skin is saggy, took me awhile to get him to eat but even at that, it was just a small rat on thursday and a tiny mouse saturday.
the two burmese pythons were houased together, do you think he might be showing symptoms?
i think imma suggest a feces test, but he hasnt deficated in a while.
he did appear like he would shed, but would that explain saggy skin?
he was fine and healthy looking a week ago.

There are several possibilities - 1) prolapsed rectum -distal GI tract(should have a lumen somewhere and possibly the presencve of fecal matter), 2) hemepenes or oviduct (would appear as a solid mass - oviducts have a lumen but there should be no fecal matter present, hemepenes have a groove), no urinary bladder in snakes. The fundamental question is what is the underlying cause, as if it is not remedied the prolapse may well recur. Treatment depends on which organ is protruding, without swelling, the cloaca can be reduced and reinserted (rather carefully), vets may place place sutures to prevent recurrence. If the tissue is swollen, this could yield necrosis to the prolapsed portion of the bowel and require further surgical intervention. Are the snakes properly hydrated, cage large enough for them to be active and stimulate normal bowel function, presence of parasites, stress, etc?
