Bryan, thanks for filling out your profile. We have had many resent trolls on the site and scamsters, so it is very important that we know who we are dealing with.
We have several members of the site who are from Alabama, and if you read the posts of the last few months, you will find several threads that deal with the reptile law in Alabama. There seems to be some disagreement on how the laws in that state are inforced.
I would start at the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources main office, although their web site really offers nothing in the way of rules and regulations for exotic animals. But you could call their offices and ask for the non-game division or permits division, and try to get in touch with the folks who issue permits for exotic animals.
Some states have really good web sites with all of the information that you need, however, Alabama does not seem to be there yet.
Perhaps some of our Alabama members will weigh in on the availibility of permits in that state.
Best Regards JohnZ

Before I posted here, I did check out AL state agency sites. Unlike many other state DNR/Game&Fish departments w/ good, informative sites which explain herp regs, AL seems to be doing a lousy job. I wouldn't be confident in a verbal interpretation from a department employee either, hence I hoped an informed AL resident, or former resident, could shed some light.
Thanks.

i am not an expert on al law, but i believe you will need a permit to keep any exotic venomous. i understand that permits are not easy to get and beyond the reach of most hobbyists.

i live in alabama and as of right now, regardless of what anyone in fish and game tell you or you hear from anyone in the department of natural resources, it is totally illegal to keep any non-indigenous venomous snakes and they do not give out permits to ANYONE.
there are people who have permits from sheriffs, but they are totally illegal and if the fish and game wanna bust them, they will. there are a few counties that don't allow venomous snake keeping at all (madison county is one of them) so check with your county. ronnie willis (sheriff of lauderdale county) has offered to write exotic venomous permits but the fish and game do NOT recognize these bogus permits and when asked about it, he will deny that he ever wrote it. a lot of shady stuff basically.
you can only keep timbers, eastern diamondbacks, copperheads, cottonmouths, corals and pygmy rattlers
