Oh yeah, Sierra, it took you a while but I was waiting patiently. The hobbiest, Herpeculturist, and the professional would be herpetologist. Petty words, but correct terms. If my spellings incorrect oh well, ya get the drift. Your right, there are other dangerous hobbies, but this is one of the top few, (ratio of those bit/ratio of those keeping, compared to equivalences of other "hobbies"). oh well, done with ranting, these forums have just been so damned slow, later,

Actually nobody ranted but you....as you can see most of us are comfortable with our place in our "hobby"..as I said lets move on...call it what you like and we will call it what we like...and that shouldnt be considered to be a division...unless you feel you are better than the rest of us...and since you admit that you started this to engage me and waited patiently for my reply..you got it , I hope your happy and satisfied, now move along to something better...

Ah, the light comes on!
Jared, I think you have missed a very important point.
Just because you are very involved in venomous snakes and it is your life inspite of your job does not mean that everyone else that has this as a hobby (or some other less intense level than full profession) is as involved or should be as involved as you are.
That doesn't make their right to keep or their contributions any less important.
Karl said driving a car is dangerous and you countered with "Yeah but look how many people drive..." So? Does the fact that more people do a thing make it any less dangerous? In fact, driving a car has gotten much more dangerous BECAUSE there are more people driving! By the way, there are more than a few hundred people keeping venomous reptiles. Not everyone is willing to be a statistic or number in someone else's list. In other words, many more people keep than are willing to admit in a poll, online, or whatever.
I don't think anyone will argue over whether or not keeping venomous reptiles is dangerous. But, truthfully, for some people it is a profession, for some it is a hobby, and for everyone else it is something in between the two. How it rates for you does not necessarily impact on how it rates for someone else.

What about Montgomery, AL., and surrounding areas. All I ever encounter are caneys. Are they neurotoxic?

Yes, definately a hobby for me. Sometimes we have to take risk to do the things we like. Fortunately, I have found that in this hobby, its fairly easy to minimize the risk. This web sight has drastically helped me realize the importance of that. I've toned my collection down getting rid of naja kaouthia and crotolus terrificus and won't go back b/c I realize the abundance of other species less lethal that are really cool(like aboreals). It no longer important to attempt to handle. I have no reason to and it doesn't prove anything(something it took me a little time to learn). I would get rid of my gaboons but I've had them since they were little(4.5 yrs) and can't do it. So I have found that by using extreme caution and keeping the right species, its possible to greatly minimize risk in this hobby. Now motorcycles, that's scary.
