never thought of it until monday, but what type of temp/humidity gauges are most accurate and least likely to ruin an evening.....reason i ask is that i have always used the round, plastic ones with the 3M tape on back....simple, cheap and moderately accurate as far as i know...but i had a 4ft eastern either knock one off or it fell on its on, but it became severely attached to his face, right below the eye, both cheeks, and the opposite side lower jaw...it stretched all the way underneath his poor head...anyway...after about 2.5hours of picking it away from his scales with one hand while doing my best to control him with my other, i finally removed it...but it was a serious ordeal, the edb got a few cuts around his mouth but more importantly, i had to risk being bitten by an already stressed animal because of something stupid....and it could have been worse because it took a bunch of scales and if it were attached to his eye, i honestly believe it would have pulled the eye scale and eye out with it...some sticky stuff unless you want it to stick to your cage....i have home-made, 3/4" thick plywood boxes and the temp is different enough on the inside to warrant having something...plus i dont like "not knowing" whats going on inside....u never know..safe or sorry....here is what bill(wls967) sent me...just wanting to get something going and maybe prevent this....i have good sense and better luck but someone less fortunate might have a life changing experience in this situation...i'm making some kind of change myself though....better quality and hopefully something held in place with a screw.....lemme know

ricky, one more thing. i have always placed "stick on" temp gauges on the
outside of the enclosure (glass is best, because it's a better conductor of
temp than plastic, but i don't think it makes a great deal of difference).
my room temperature dictates the enclosure temperature, so they work just as
well on the outside. (if you use artificial heat, they might read a little
off) i don't like heat rocks, but i used to use under tank heaters. nothing
ever stayed over the heated area, so i figured why use them. i turn my
thermostat to 80 or OFF during the day, and to 70-74 at nite. basically,
this just simulates late summer to early fall for the snakes, however, with
the daytime temps being a little cooler than actual outside temps. anything
over 85 degrees just seems to make snakes hide anyway, at least in my
opinion. keeping them this way has never posed a problem that i am aware of
and everything i've kept was as healthy or healthier the day i released or
sold it as the day i got it. oh, on those days when you "HAVE" to handle
something that is known to be aggressive, drop it's temp down to 60 for an
hour or so and it should help slow him or her down a little. i have even
used frozen bottles or jugs of water in the enclosure (just not on top of
them) to cool an enclosure (and resident) to make the really nasty ones more
manageable. reptiles could probably stand lower than 60 degrees for short
periods of time, but i'm not sure and have never tried it.

Actually walmart sells a temp/humidity digital unit with a probe for temp that cost around 14.00. The probe is about 1/2" long and is easy to install in a corner with the cord running out the top....The main unit can be mounted on a wall outside the cage or the outside of the cage....and I have never had a problem with it..

Hi!
I use Indoor/Outdoor Temperature Humidity gauges that I bought from Radio Shack. The gauges have a very nice feature: recording of Min/Max temperatures, which lets me know the variation throughout the day. The cost was less than $10.00 each.
The gauges are mounted on the outside of my enclosures with the remote probes running inside through the vents. This set-up looks quite professional and gives *very* accurate temp/rH readings.
I hope this is of some help.
peace
Craig
