Hello! I usually just lurk on here, but saw my "neighbor" again in the backyard and got a good look at him. He is approx three feet long, and as big around as my thumb. His head is the same size as his body or maybe a little smaller. Gun metal gray in color and has no real markings. Seems to be a solid color. When I went out to get a better look he stayed stretched out but beat his tail against the grass. I am by no means an expert on snakes, just curious about the neighbor living in my bushes. I live in the panhandle of Florida if that helps. Rest assured he won't come to any harm living there.

Like every one else on this site will say, if possible try to get a good picture of your new "neihbor" and post it on here. Then all the experts can then tell you what he/she is.

Sounds like a Black Racer...
Was the head noticably bigger than the neck, or a smooth transition from the body to the head>

There was a smooth and subtle change from body to head size. The head was the same size as the body with no noticable narrowing before transitioning. I KNOW he wasn't venomous, just curious about what he might be. Had to turn him around as he was headed to the next door neighbor's yard, and wouldn't have survived there.

"Gun metal gray in color and has no real markings."
I agree with Larry, sounds like a black racer.

Thanks guys...I quit being lazy and looked on the 'net for a while...he looked like a black racer or a coach whip. Either way, I was excited to see him. I've come a long way...raised on a farm in the deep south, and before I started hanging out on this board, sadly I'd have killed him. After learning from ya'll, I just want to figure out a way to keep him happy and around.

Distinguishing between racers & coachwips in the adult stage is not all that difficult. The coachwhip, except in rare instances, is black for the forward 25% to 35% of the body, fading to tan for the rest of it. They seem to average about seven feet. Racers are gun-metal to black all over the top & average three to four feet, maxing out at 6 feet.
