Another distinguishing factor between racers & coachwips is that you can often walk up on a racer, and it will stand its ground and vibrate its tail, while a coachwhip will almost always make a rush toward safety.
The scales on coachwhips are also larger, and stand out, thus the "braided" appearance that gives the snake the coachwhip name.
This last weekend we found a juvenile coachwhip at Applachacola that was a solid beautyfull tan / brown the whole length of its body. It had only a small amount of darker shading on the top of its head. `Twas a very unique looking coachwhip.

These are links to the pictures of the snake skin we found in our yard. We have had a blackish color snake roaming our year for the past week maybe, and at first I thought it was a black racer. When we found the snake skin the other day, I decided to look at what a black racer snake skin looked like and that's how I came across this site. The images of the design on black racers was different from the one we found, and i just want to make sure that the snake isn't harmful or anything because I do have a dog and I don't want him to get bit. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated, and I do apologize about the quality of the photos, my camera did not want to focus while really close to the skin.

Tracie, the shed skin you found looks like it came from a harmless ratsnake. They are very common in your area of Florida.
As far as the other snake you described, that sounds like a black racer. Those are also very common in your area.
If you go to Amazon.com and search "snakes of Florida" you will find several good field guides available that will help you with snake identification. The used ones are often at a very good price.
