Hmm, mine would have to be a tie between broadbands and Trans Pecos. I like the thick, high contrast of the broadbands probably best, as long as they're red and not too muddy.

Id have to go with A.c.mokasen. Some are just dull looking but others can be quite vibrant. Some of the Kentucky and New York forms are just beautiful.
BTW, baby coppers can be duller then parents but I would call it a color change.

My favorite are the irratic broken bands of a true southern copperhead. I have also found certain populations (which are protected by virtue of their location) which have a definite pink hue to the copper. (Sounds girly, I know. But they're visually stunning).
To answer your other question juveniles have a sulfurous (yellow) tail that they lose as adults. Although I have found one copperhead (same protected population)that was sexually mature (based solely on SVL) that maintained a definite yellow tail.

Wesley,
I have always liked the trans-pecos copperheads the best, however, all forms of copperheads can have some stunning individuals.
We often see some copperheads at reptile shows labeled as trans-pecos, which are clearly not. Folks often try to pass of integrade snakes as trans-pecos, when the snake are probably trans-brazos, LOL !
True trans-pecos copperheads have amazing brick red and purplish brown colors, and are very distinctive.
The pinkish hues of southern copperheads can be stunning, and the chestnut hues of northern copperheads can be fantastic, and the orange hues of the broadband and osage copperheads can be stunning also. All races will have great looking individuals, and individuals that are dull and not impressive.
As far as young, many young copperheads are much darker than their parents, and only come into their best colors after a couple of years of age. This is probably a survival thing, as an dark individual would tent to blend into vegitation much better than a bright colored individual.
On a seperate note, the taxonomist will probably change the copperheads within a year, and we will probably find southern and northern copperheads combined into one, and osage and broad banded combined into one, and the trans-pecos left alone. This will create 3 copperheads in the US instead of 5. This will be based on the Clinal change of populations over broad ranges of intergradation. Same thing is happning with the cottonmouths. All will be based on mitocondrial DNA findings. Stay tuned, as it could be fun, and might make the Canebrake / Timber thing look rather tame, LOL.
Best Regards JohnZ

I have always been partial to the phaeogaster and the pictigaster myself but in the last year or so I have seen a few nice laticinctus come out of the Baird, Texas area with bright blue tails that are quite interesting. These are adults and not the caudal-tipped youngsters.
I just kicked a pair back out from that area last night that were very nice looking also. They are some of the most handsome I have seen in a while. Then again....I like just about any snake that I stare at long enough.

Amen AquaHerp...I too seem to like every snake that I stare at long enough, although with regard to Coppers, I am somewhat partial to pictigasters, probably because I have 9.14 of them.
